I took my 2019 JLU 3.6 into the dealer to have the auxiliary battery replaced. When I got home I found this mysterious black plastic part and a bolt sitting on the engine. Any idea what it is or where it goes? I’d rather not go back to the dealer for more A+ work.

When they send that email asking for you to give them 10s on the survey, send back that picture and explain things. Report back.

I absolutely will. I had an issue where the ESS does not work and always says ”not available, battery charging.” They replaced the auxiliary battery under warranty but the issue persists. Such a waste of time.

Did they check the main battery too? I'd go back and get that replaced, and have them fix their screw up while doing the main.

If he does that they will make him a 7 am appt 2 weeks out and ask him to leave it all day.
I wish that was a joke... I've experienced that myself. Took 3 appointments and almost 2 months to get my batteries replaced.

If they cared at all, they'd get him in right away to fix their mistake.

Update: I went back to the dealer Saturday morning when they opened without an appointment. I nicely let them know I wanted the battery replaced and that they should have done it the first time. As you guys said I had to leave it all day, but they did give me Ram loaner. Good news is I have 2 new batteries and everything is working again.

My ESS quit working last September, just about 1 year old. I finally replaced the AUX battery in December thinking that was the culprit. It worked again for 2-3 weeks then stopped. I found that if I put a trickle charger on the system it would work again for 2-3 weeks then stop.

A few weeks ago I decided to replace the main battery as a last ditch effort. I was disappointed at first when ESS still didn't work, but after a few days it has now started working again flawlessly (and I never put a charger on it).

I had the main tested when I took it back for the core charge, and it tested fine and even said it had like 900 CCA capacity. It did, however, have the two vent caps bulging up under the sticker on top of the battery.

So in my case, it does seem like it was the main battery causing the problems. I never got a warning light or error, just that ESS wouldn't work. I'm not a big fan of ESS sometimes, but the fact that it wasn't working bothered me knowing something wasn't working like it used to.

Could I have taken it to the dealer and saved $300? Maybe. But then I would have had to take multiple trips to/from the Dealer, leave it for days - and probably be told "there's nothing wrong" since a battery tester said it's fine. Clearly it wasn't fine since the new main battery was the only thing I changed and now it's working perfectly again. In my case, I'd rather have spent the $300 and not had to dick around with the dealership at all.

I did the same thing with my pickup a few years ago. It was 2 years old and had less than 20k miles. The battery died. I id some research and foud that the OEM batteries had all kinds of issues. Went to O'Reilly and bought their Super Start made by Deka and have had zero problems with that truck for over 4 years now. That's near record battery life for me down here.

My ESS went out about 3 months ago. I don't care, because I don't like it. My fuel mileage is the same. The voltage readings on the dash are 14 plus. But, something is amiss and I don't like that. I guess I'll have to pull the batteries and analyze them. I won't mess with the dealer due to time and frustration. I have just under 15k miles and I've had the Jeep just short of 2 years. Maybe I'll just disable ESS and eliminate the little battery. Less is more. Anything to eliminate complications is good.

Agree with all of you. I don’t like the ESS and had it disabled with a Tazer for almost a year. I took the Tazer off for a state inspection and that’s when I noticed the ESS not working. My Jeep has 3 months of warranty left which is the only reason I made the dealer fix it. Ended up with two free batteries, but only time will tell if it was worth the headache. I love my Jeep but there are days when I browse Camrys.
