So I finally get the time to go do the Aux battery delete. To my surprise when I opened the hood, the aux battery cable was already gone. Not tied back, just gone! And so was Fuse F42. See pics.

Problem is that the ESS system works.....I pull up to a light and the car shuts down. Then when I take my foot off the brake it starts up again. So I must be missing or misunderstanding something about all this...please help!

This is a 2019 Sahara with the Altitude package if that makes any difference?
Confused

Yes this is used. I assume somebody already did the delete. But why does it still work?

Removing fuse f42 disables the relay that disconnects the main battery during an ESS event. In effect, your main battery has taken over the function of the disconnected aux battery.

That's what I figured...but is this ok? I mean am I good-to-go? I was trying to get rid of the Aux Batt to avoid having the issues I keep reading about on the forum here.....

Maybe the previous owner installed the Auto Stop/Start device.

Nothing about disconnecting the ESS/Aux battery from your JL has anything to do with whether the ESS system turns on or off unless you pull the cable from the negative terminal of the Aux battery off the main battery's negative post and don't either remove Fuse 42, and don't fused jumper posts N1 and N2 in the Power Distribution Center.

You can 1)turn off ESS with two batteries, 2) operate it with one, 3) turn it off with two, or 4) turn it off with one. It is completely independent of whether you have an ESS battery.

If you don't disconnect Fuse 42 but do the aforementioned cable then, and only then then vehicle will detect no ESS aux battery and turn the ESS off light on in the dash. This is the only condition I know of where disconnecting your Aux battery also effects whether your ESS system engages.

So..you are currently running ESS with one battery. Most vehicles do. I believe the Genesis Offroad battery kit does--although that involves different batteries and setup and isn't a fair comparison to the stock battery setup.

I don't recommend it. The perfect storm of a main battery on its way out, a cold night, and too many (aftermarket) appliances running at a red traffic light *might* cause the vehicle to detect the voltage drop in the main battery, running the ESS event, after that voltage has dropped too low to force the early termination of an ESS event and attempt to recrank the engine when the battery lacks the juice to crank. Turn ESS off by pressing the button each time you cold crank or buy tech to do it for you.

One way to view the Genesis system wiring is that it switches the function of the (upsized) aux battery from supporting the Jeep electronics during an ESS event to supporting extra electronics when the Jeep is off.

In a stock Jeep, the two batteries are connected except when the main battery positive is disconnected from the Jeep electronics during ESS events; the Genesis system keeps the two batteries connected (including during ESS events) except when it disconnects the aux battery positive when the Jeep is switched to "off" mode.
