to follow-up;
i took a crack at servicing my remote after getting no response to inquiries to @Warn.
was able to get out the tiny Phillips screws from the casing and replaced the weird little 21/23 batteries. cleaned up the contacts i could get at along the way, and it worked fine while playing respooling games last weekend after approx a dozen recoveries in the snow the weekend before.
moral of the story; when your batteries are a couple years old, put some fresh ones in even if the ones in there still show rated voltage at test. ?
