I want to wire up a few accessories mounted in the rear exterior and cargo area of the vehicle to my Voswitch VL400. Do I really need to run both positive and ground wires up to the engine compartment or can I save some wiring and ground those accessories in the back?

Much like an aircraft, you should be able to ground to the frame and/or body (as long as bare metal)
That said, you could always just like...test it. ground somewhere in the back and if it doesn't work, you either done fucked up, or you just gotta ground at the relay.

I think it should work. Should be easy to test.

This is how I do it. I run the ground wires to the screws right in front of the vos switch. However I only do this to keep track of all my wires. This is completely not needed. You can just find any ground close to the device your hooking up.

I'm about to switch mine and do this as well. There's next to no room in the Voswitch panel to wire anything up. It was a nightmare getting two sets of wires in let alone if I decide to wire anything else up. At least moving the ground wires out of there will make life a tad easier.

Thanks all… pretty much what I figured. Just wanted to be reassured there wasn’t any need to have the ground in the relay switch box.

The only time I had grounding issues was with audio equipment. Ground loops are terrible to track down and hearing the engine whining while listening to tunes sucks.

That said, ground to the body after some sanding as others have said.

The only reason I ran a ground into the cabin was because I was chasing audio gremlins. 😂 🤷‍♂️

A dedicated battery ground is often considered best practice for high amp devices, simplifying fault finding, and minimizing possibility of radio interference.

Yep… have done so for my fridge and 2Kw power station. The additional switched power will be for lights and other low amp devices.
