Used Wrangler From Canada

Hello,

I am doing some shopping for a used JL. I recently found a pretty good price at a local dealer on a 2022 Sahara with only 9800 miles. I was told that had formerly been a corporate car. I was informed that, due to it originating in Canada, all warranties were void in the US (I am assuming that is the reason for the low price). It seemed to be in great shape and seemed to drive really well. I am no car expert, but I got underneath it and it seemed like it was in really good condition. It is basically the same price as an older JL with more miles and no warranty, so I am looking for advice on what an experienced Jeep owner would look out for in this situation. I, unfortunately cannot afford a new one, but aside from the new warranty situation It seems to be a great deal.

In addition to no powertrain warranty, consider the lack of corrosion warranty too. Youll have to be ok with the current and future corrosion on the doors, hood, windshield frame and tailgate.

OK, thanks! Is corrosion a pretty common issue with wranglers? It seems as it may be. Is there a treatment out there that can help alleviate this? I live in Oregon where it's definitely wet, but not salty..

Have you tried pricing a comparable warranty purchase to see how the total cost would compare to a US one ?

It's quite possible the warranty isn't valid in the US, but it should still be valid in Canada. If not, then I'd be concerned as to why.
Looks like you're close to the border, so worst case...
First thing is to check the carfax. Then search the VIN, make sure nothing comes up, like it was bought at auction three months ago and you see the before pic from before the repairs.
I wouldn't be dissuaded by a lack of warranty.
Are you buying from a private individual or a big dealer?
Considering you're buying used, you need to do the usual due diligence to be sure this has been taken care of. As for wether or not it's been abused off road, look underneath... If you post a lot of pics on here, many people will chime in quickly.

Common issue with the JL. I'd be surprised if this particular Wrangler doesn't already show signs of it. There really arent any preventive measures you can take. They don't paint under the hinges at the factory so you have bare aluminum under there. I suppose you could buy a set of the new hinges that have the zinc backing shim, paint the unpainted surface and replace the hinges but that won't do anything to prevent corrosion along the edges of the hood, doors etc.
Also, an extended warranty won't cover body corrosion.

If this vehicle was first sold in Canada be sure the under hood emission label says that it meets US emission standards.

If by corporate you mean rental there is actually a loophole of sorts, if a car was originally sold in Canada as a rental fleet it can in fact be sold with warranty in tact in US. Build sheet will say something along the lines of CAN/AM warranty. Our 2020 had been a rental in Canada, we purchased it and on the first warranty issue (damn corrosion on hinges) the dealer had to do some sort on one time conversion to full American warranty. It's since been in again for corrosion on door bottoms with no issue. This switch was done by a dealer I did not purchase from. So it's a slim chance, but some Canadian Wranglers do have US warranties.

Thanks so much for the replies! This particular dealer is a Chevrolet (not Jeep)dealer. The salesman told me that it would not be under warranty...How did you know which dealer to go to switch the warranty? Was it just a local Jeep dealer?

I noticed a number of Canada vehicles for sale here when I was searching for mine. Quite a few of them were in the Seattle area.

Maybe put the VIN up for members to see, then they may be able to provide you with more information. Even possibly contact some of the Jeep dealers offering warranty's on this site to see what they have to say
