I have only unmarried my Tazer once when I needed to take it into the dealership. When I remarried it, I was surprised to see that my previous settings had not been saved. I was only using tire size and tire pressure monitoring at the time, so no big deal. I have not spent a lot of time with the Tazer but see that my software is out of date and I would like to update it. Do I need to unmarry the tazer in order to update the software? I'm thinking I can just unplug it update it and have access to the new updates that come with the current software release. Can anyone confirm whether I must on Mary and remarry or whether I can just on Dock, update the software and plug it back in?

As easy as it is to unmarry the Tazer, it becomes a pain If every time I remarry it none of the settings are retained.

TIA

Not retaining settings is the main draw-back to the Tazer. I do not own a Tazer yet (or a JL :) ). I hope the settings are retained in the Tazer upon a re-marry. If not, I guess I'd have to make a cheat-sheet to set things back up. A lot of button presses :(. I intend to get the JScan to set tire size, gear ratio, etc. Then marry the Tazer to add "non-critical" settings e.g. no 3 horn honk, etc. @Rhinebeck01 That way, a Tazer un-marry would not wipe out the tire size and gear ratio.

Retaining settings in the Tazer should be a priority for Z Automotive, assumimg it does not do it now. My appology to Z Automotive if they are retained in the module so a re-marry is as painless as possible.

I realize I'm about to be educated. ?

You don't have to unmarry to update, but it is recommended.

That way, a Tazer un-marry would not wipe out the tire size and gear ratio.
An unmarry restores the vehicle's settings (including tire size and gear ratio) to exactly what they were at the exact point in time that the Tazer was married to the vehicle. The unmarry essentially returns the vehicle to "stock" settings.

This will never be a priority. It's not how the Tazer works. On a marry, the Tazer reads and saves a copy of the vehicle's settings at that point in time. The marry is not writing anything setting wise to the vehicle. It is these settings that get restored when the Tazer is unmarried.

I was wondering the same last time I unmarried, and this is a great explanation, Dave. Makes a lot of sense when you consider that the dealer may have performed an update while it was unmarried.

Yes, exactly. And this is the reason why the Tazer should always be unmarried before a trip to the dealer. You can very easily overwrite a dealer flash/update by leaving the Tazer married and then unmarrying.

I took my out for the Jeep Wave oil change. What a pain to remember how to unmarry, then reinstall, remarry, change settings and reboot. Retain your instructions or save a link on your phone to make it easier. While mine was out, I updated the firmware in it. I do however understand the need remove it as dealers do plug in even for an oil change. My Chevrolet dealer told me GM requires them to plug in each time a vehicle comes in for service, whatever the reason may be.

Yeah Tazer sucks for this reason. I run a flash tool for gears, tpms disable, tire size etc.
Tazer for live features.

Its kind of pointless for permanent changes like gears etc. Especially when still under warranty.

It really only takes a few minutes I did it in less than 10 hurriedly before a service, but better safe than sorry in my book.

I've only taken out a couple times when I took it to the dealer and I had a shop that knows how to do it for me friend of mine they unmarried it and then married it back both times. Do I have to update it if it's been 2 years I'm not doing anything new I know they got that pin lock you can use now but you got to update that feature but is it okay where I just wait till I have to take it out when I take it to the dealer to update it you don't have to have it updated all the time do you as long as you're just using the current features and it's working?

You don’t have to update it unless you want the new features or you’re having problems with it.
