I have a 2021 Rubicon. It has the original map, and I believe there is an upgrade for about $100. However, I find the map to be close to useless - I have to zoom in a lot to see any details, but then I don't have any context of where I am; zoom out, and it shows only a couple main roads, and the arrow is just floating in the middle of nowhere. Does the newest version act like this too? Or is there a way to display more detail?

No. It'll still be outdated. Navigation.com is responsible for these map files and they're horrible at keeping them up to date.

There is almost zero difference between the maps of my original '18 radio that ate shit, its '20 replacement, and my buddy's '23 392. My city has changed a lot over the past decade and streets that were missing as far back as the '18 radio still don't show up on the '23, despite newer map versions.

None... but it pays well.
I use CoPilot app on my phone and tablet. Its maps update at least 2x a year. Have been with it for at least 5 years and only paid $2.00, one time purchase. It may not be as informative as Google maps but it's better at navigation with nicer customizations.

Unless you're one of the rare people that swear by built-in navigation, there's no reason to update. That'd be handing over a Benjamin to get updated maps (not software) that's typically at least a year out of date when you get it. All with a horrible UI and a horrific algorithm.

Just stick with Google Maps / Waze projected onto your screen. Those get updated constantly, with my changes typically showing up within a day to a week or two.

I use iPhone and find myself using CarPlay more often than the native applications. I'm wondering if I should just cancel all services and just go with the phone.

If you have a 2024 then the maps are great. The maps are upgraded every 4 months and with the 2024 and the TomTom unit it is a matter of having a PC... downloading the software onto a 32Gb thumb drive and plugging it into a USB port. After that, and about 38 minutes later, you are updated to the newest and greatest. Yes, all of the updates are free and well worth the time because it looks great and the detail is awesome on the 8.5" screen. ***Do not try to update the maps or the head unit using a MAC. Trust me... I have learned that PC's are the only way it will work.

It makes sense to not pay for things you don't use.

When you live in a area of 14,200 square miles of a megalopolis and 736 miles of major streets and 4,850 miles of public streets... navigation is essential.

I'm trying to find where someone said (or even implied) that navigation wasn't essential.

Right - I was just wondering why pay extra for maps, more detailed maps, better mapping routes, etc., when if everything you need is on your iPhone and iPhone projects its screen on to the Jeep via CarPlay. No doubt mapping is essential.

Not worth it. They'll get you like what Sirius/XM does the moment you pay for something...they'll probably bug you eternally about getting the next "update" or some BS "deal" on a bundled blah blah 😆

Except it's extremely easy to get XM for an extremely cheap price. And unlike our pre-'24 built-in nav, XM (IMHO) is actually a decent / useful product.
