I have a 2019 JLU with 3.6 and auto transmission. Recently I have been hearing a low whine, howling sound when I accelerate and decelerate usually around 5th gear and lower. I took it in to have the front and rear differential fluid changed out which they did and diagnosed the whining noise. The mechanic was able to pin it down to the transmission pump and advised me to go to the dealership under the power train warranty. So I went today and was told that this was normal and charged me $232. I wasn’t so confident in Jeep’s response and diagnostics but they were really proud that they did a car wash on a day that it was raining. Any way on my way home from the dealership I stopped in at a transmission shop and he listened to the problem and said that it is probably the pump but since it was diagnosed by another mechanic he felt he would be stealing my money to go into it any further. Anyone else have this issue? How did you handle it? I plan on visiting another dealership later this week. I have no issues with shifting or anything just the whining noise.

Thanks

I believe I would have asked the dealership to show me another Jeep on the lot that has automatic transmission that makes the same (normal) sound.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help; I really hope you get it worked out.

Is this a noise that just started or has it been a gradual increase? How many miles? Sometimes replacing the tranny fluid can make the noise go away if it has never been changed. I do not think the fluid change is covered under warranty. Just a thought. I am not that familiar with the JL AT.

Thank you. I tried to test drive another car in the lot, but they told me they didn’t have another 3.6 with auto in the lot. I didn’t believe them so I made trips to other dealerships and they only had the 2.0 in stock.

Yes it has been gradual, but it can def be heard now at 40-50 mph on acceleration and deceleration. The transmission only has 46k on it. I have a second appointment with an independent transmission shop to look at it. If they agree with the first shop that its a transmission pump and Jeep still doesn’t want to fix it, i really have no choice but to fix it on my own and then go the legal action to be reimbursed.

I just received a quote on changing the tranny fluid on the Jeep. Quote was $768. Is that what they go for now, i thought that was high.

Thanks again

Jim

Thanks

That sounds very high. Through a dealer? Is that with a filter change? I know the AT fluid is expensive, but....? Jeep claims this is a "life time" AT fluid but the German tranny manufacturer specs every 100K kilometers for a change. That's 62K in miles. In days of old it was a messy job to DYI a fluid and filter change but it wasn't expensive. I would check elsewhere for a flush exchange. They do not replace the filter.

You’re at 4 years and 46k. You have a 5 years/60k power train warranty. You have visited the dealer and documented the issue. I would not take it to an Indy shop right now. If the tranny blows, Jeep will blame the Indy shop and deny your warranty. Drive the piss out of it, until it fails. Check to see exactly how much time you have left on your warranty.

I am changing the transmission fluid myself and it is expensive even doing it my self. The transmission fluid six quarts is $107 plus tax on Amazon...

Amazon Mopar 8 &9 speed transmission fluid

The transmission pan, gasket, filter was $220 at the dealership. It should be about an hour or so of labor. So I would think $768 is a kind of high.

It is not a difficult job to do.

have you watched the videos?
you don’t need a new pan. some even reuse the gasket. i’d definitely change the filter. i’d probably change the gasket. but you just use the same pan. hopefully this cuts your cost a little.

The dealer in our area only sets it as a set. So I have the whole package.

Uhh, I don’t think you get a free transmission service with a pinion bearing swap.
