Tow Package

Hello!
I'm new here and recently bought a used 2022 Sport S, 2 Door. It came with a hitch and switch box under the steering wheel. Does that mean that it has a tow package and is able to tow travel trailers that are under 2000# with a tongue weight of under 200#?

The hitch and particularly the loose 4-flat wiring strongly suggests a post-facto installation of aftermarket parts.

The black box and the small switch underneath the steering wheel suggest the same. I can't currently determine the function of the box. Can you tell us what occurs when the switch is used while the engine is running? (Edit: If it's a brake controller, it seems to have been mounted in the incorrect orientation.)

Factory tow packages usually include the larger H7 battery under the hood, as opposed to the slightly smaller H6 battery that is installed in Wranglers that don't have that option. Does your '22 have the original battery still in situ?

That stuff's all aftermarket. The box is a trailer brake controller, and I'm guessing the switch kills power to it when it's not being used...

It didnt come with tow package.

You can buy the mopar wiring kit and install it yourself.

My 2 door 2019 didnt come with tow package. I put some takeoff springs from a rubi that did. Installed mopar tow wiring. And an H7 battery. I towed around 1500lbs with zero issues.

I agree, it looks like a tow hitch that was installed after the factory. The wires hanging out by the hitch give it away.

In saying that, I know that some years around that time the tow package was a very confusing option. Some people thought they got it while others didn't. As such, many have bought the mopar parts and bolted it on to add the hitch. It may be a mopar hitch...it kind of looks like it, but those trailer wires hanging down are not factory. Even on my 2025, it didn't say anything about the tow package when I built it, but I prayed it came with it.

I would see where that trailer controller box plugs into as well. A factory install has a harness up under the steering wheel where the wires plug into. And lastly, you can put the VIN in to get the window sticker or build sheet to see if it came with the jeep. Build sheets are also usually broke, so you can login to the mopar web page/portal, put the VIN in, and see everything that came with your jeep.

Others have adeptly answered that it seems unlikely that you have the factory tow package, but the issue of whether, despite this you can tow under 2000 pounds with under 200 pounds of tongue weight remains.

The answer to that latter question is "likely." It's my understanding that the 2 door JL can handle up to 350 pounds of tongue weight and pull up to 2000 pounds, so the question then becomes whether or not the hitch that was installed, factory or otherwise, can handle that load.

It's my understanding that the hitch market for JL Wrangler, 2 or 4 door, pretty much only sells class 2 and class 3 hitches, either of which can handle the requirements you specify.

That said it would be a good idea to get the hitch's installation checked out by someone in the know, and based on the pictures, get rid of that rust, paint it, and make sure such wear hasn't compromised its strength.

All 2 doors are rated to tow 2k lbs factory tow package option or not.

With few exceptions, tongue weight ratings at the hitch face are 10% of the vehicle's published tow capacity. The JL's specs would be 200 lbs. and 2,000 lbs., respectively.

The receiver hitches are Class II on both the two- and four-door Wranglers.

I'll say this much Melanie, it is my opinion that a dealership will steer clear of passing judgement on any hitch that wasn't both an Official MOPAR one, and one that wasn't installed at a dealership or by tow package factory configuration.

If you can spray penetrating oil on the hitch hardware and spin a wrench, the effort to remove, restore and reinstall the hitch is easy DIY work in the garage.

If you do take it to an RV dealer, etc., be prepared for a salty labor charge. Just something to keep in mind.

Consider giving a local UHaul rental business a call, for a quote. They do offer hitch installations as part of their business model. Maybe they can offer a few suggestions here.
