My new tires had 2500 miles on them when I left on a summer trip towing the Jeep behind my RV. By the time I get home I'll add about 2000 miles of driving and 3200 miles being towed. Is almost 8000 miles of wear too late to include the brand new spare int the rotation? In hindsight I should have done a 5 wheel rotation before I left but too late now.

My intent when I put on new tires was to do 5 wheel rotations to get maximum life. Even if I have to go with 4 wheel rotations the tires will probably age out before they wear out.

I don't think the miles on the tires between rotations matters as much as the size difference from wear those miles create. I don't know what the size difference allowance is for different diameter tires across our axles. I believe you can have a difference of 4/32" with no issues.
I typically do a five tire rotation at oil change time. I've never measured mine to see how much of a difference they have.

You do realize you can do a 5 tire rotation at any time using only the jack in the Jeep, right?

Spare to rear passenger
Rear passenger to front passenger
Front passenger to driver rear
Driver rear to driver front
Driver front to spare

It's only the 4 tire rotation that requires a shop lift.

Or jack and a jack stand

I have ALWAYS done my 5 tire rotation every other oil change … approx. 6,000 - 8,000 miles and have been fine.

You will be fine!

Not really something I want to do while I'm traveling. I don't like using the Jeep jack unless I have to.

8,000 miles is no big deal. The difference in tread depth isn't much at that point. Even 10-15,000 miles isn't a big deal.

Good and timely info for me, as my Jeep will be doing duty as a Toad soon. I do "5-tire" regularly, and never thought about the added mileage that they will see while I'm away from home.

This is one of the reasons that these forums are worth reading!

I wouldn't worry about it, but just in case, moving the spare to the front will mitigate any push you may get from having slightly different diameters on the rear drive axle.

Push? Only when locked, right?

Not in my experience, I tried to rotate in a new one after a sidewall tear, I'm probably was more than 10k on the others.

Makes sense since the outside tire in a turn would get more power since it's traveling further. The larger diameter slightly mirror that.

I did the tire rotation today. There was less than 2/32 difference between the new spare and the tires with miles.

I've been flat towing Jeeps behind motorhomes since 2006. 4 different Jeeps, 3 different motorhomes. Keep a close eye on the driver's front tire. At the first sign of abnormal wear/cupping, rotate. They all did it. 33, 35, and 37 inch tires. MTs worse than ATs. All Jeeps were within alignment specs with no wobbles. I blame it on the crown of the road. Jeep wants to track towards the shoulder while the motorhome pulls it straight. Some may disagree, but that's my story! Happy camping.
