I picked up a screw and got a flat towards the middle of my tread. Had a tire shop take the tire off and plug it from the inside. My questions are:
1. Will the plug stay in place if I air down on the trail to about 18 psi.
2.how long should it last (I live in dry climate)

thanks in advance

I had similar hole on my 315/70r17 KO2. Discount tire installed a plug from the inside and I aired down, to around the same PSI several times. Shortly before I got rid of them the plug was wearing better than the tire and sticking up about 3/16” higher. Enough that I needed to trim it flush with a razor blade.

Thinking it's a plug patch combo. It'll probably be ok since it was applied from the inside. Can you use it as a spare?

Thanks. It’s the spare now but will rotate in a couple months. Sounds like it’s good to go.

If they had to dismount the tire and do it from the inside, and you can obviously see a plug sticking out of the tire, it's probably a plug/patch combo as mentioned. I really wouldn't be concerned about it all and air down just like you normally would.

I plugged my wife's tire a couple of days ago - did it with a self-kit from the outside.

But you all are saying they did it from the inside. What's the difference? Should I be worried?

difference is the Plug/Patch from inside is shaped like a Mushroom, with the stem of the Mushroom through the hole where your puncture is(/was).
it physically con not come out through the hole.

Gummie Worm plugs can be very effective too, but rely on the adhesive to keep them in.

I've never tried that but it's got good reviews. Pricey. I typically use one like this with rubber cement. Do not use the white adhesive Slime kits have now, it's garbage. Use Gluetread for sidewall repairs.

I have had the ARB plug kit in my rides for over 15 years. Helped a lot of people, on and off road.
I just bought an extra box of plugs.

Thanks, the one I have right now is the orange colored plugs, I've not been impressed with it at all... I pulled a 1/4" steel rod out of my wife's tire, it was still in the tread, but too far out for local shops to repair it... For now, I just stuck a plug in it, but prefer to do something more permanent...

The ARB also gets my vote.

I use 10-15 plugs a year, between ATVs and vehicle’s and helping out random strangers. If I plug a tire for a stranger they always ask how long the plug will last. I tell them I have never had one that didn’t outlast the tire but if taking it to a tire shop and getting it patched from the inside makes them feel better then do it. I have had great luck with these and I never use the glue.

never delt with the plug patches from the inside because it’s a more involved process but I can understand why it would be more reliable for the long term.

I use a similar plug kit to the ARB but to anyone looking to buy a plug kit I would suggest getting the tool kit that has metal handles on the tools not plastic. I was pushing a plug into a tire one day and a plastic handle tool broke and the metal shaft stabbed into the heal of my hand towards my wrist.
