My JL tailgate has a rubber lip all the way across, pretty sure the previous owner added it, don't see it on other JLs.

no tape on the tailgate on my 2022, nor does it leak from high pressure washes which I use during the cold weather, I hand wash in warm weather, but again no leaks there...

Actually, I’ve seen it leak way more than this. If you hit it with the right angle, they all leak. We looked at others on the lot and you can literally see daylight in both corners or the glass.

The 303 seal protectant and some felt stripping solved the squeaking for now! Thanks everyone!

Glad to hear it worked out for you, I doubled checked mine, and I do have tape on the corner near the hinge, but none on the other side (odd?), maybe they ran out of tape the day mine was built, LOL!!

2021 JLUR has tape on tailgate from factory. 303 is great stuff. Glad you solved your squeak. I haven't noticed any leaking. I do hand wash with an electric pressure washer. I do not go through auto car washes. Haven't noticed any water from a daily rain either. Have hardtop or softop pending time of year and so far no leaks noticed.

I took it in for water intrusion around the corners of the tailgate in high pressure car washes (hard top). They also tested another new one on the lot and apparently when you blast water at that angle, they all do it. Fair enough… it’s a convertible and rain, so far, hasn’t been an issue.

Today I noticed a lot of squeaking from the rear, especially on uneven surfaces. Upon inspection, I noticed some tape that’s wearing down. Is this from the factory or did my dealer add it during the attempted fix? Looks like I should just peel it off

And along those lines, is tracking down squeaks and rattles a losing battle on a Jeep that’s off roaded a fair bit? Just the nature of a modular car with lots of hard plastics?

Had a blast in the mud today!
As others have said, tape is factory. My '20 has it too. Do you have aftermarket wheels or tires? If they are heavier or not adjusted on the tailgate you may get some squeaks/rattles. From the looks of the tape you tailgate is moving a little. Change out this: Amazon.com: Tailgate Limiter Fits for 2018-2023 JL JLU Rear Trunk Door Latch, Tail Gate Stopper Compatible with Jeep Wrangler : Everything Else

It may help.
