The gold standard of testing is to independently load test each battery. The dealer may have merely taken a volt meter to the batteries, perhaps not even separating them from each other when effecting their test.

Ask for printouts of a load test, and replace the main battery.

I have the Genesis Dual Battery system as well but used the Full River/Full Throttle batteries. The peace of mind is worth the cost!
Where do get those and what’s estimated cost ? The aux battery at dealer was quoted at $350

Could be battery or batteries are on the way out. Weird things happen with battery issues on these.
And yesterday I completely turned off the radio for a bit, when I turned it back on the ESS is now working !!! Still battery issue or some crazy wiring with radio? Are those connected to the same power source ?

It is normal for the batteries to be charging for a little while after starting, if ESS begins to work after a short drive, it’s fine. If you start for the second time that day and it still says “battery charging”, then it’s a weak battery that won’t hold a full charge past the surface.

Jeep Wrangler JL Stop/Start not working - battery charging tenor (8)

Seriously, I bought both a new aux and main from O'reilly for less than that. And then I got a core charge back when I brought the old ones in for recycling.

I'm hoping that price includes installation.

My ESS hasn't worked since 2019 and the battery has been charging ever since. Once every few months ESS kicks on and works once or twice in a row and then the "feature" becomes disabled again. As another poster said- it's saved me from buying a Tazer.

These battery threads always have that dealer said batteries are OK post. The dealerships are not your friend. Save yourself a bad day and just go ahead and replace those junk factory batteries. Change them both on the same day or you'll be wishing you had one day.

Think of your Jeep's dual batteries like your multi-battery flashlight. Always change all batteries together.

It did. I think I could get somewhere else and have neighbor install for me.
@Pcw67

Careful in regard to suggestions here, Paige...

For you, I would suggest just going to the dealer and letting them replace / install the Aux battery and then pay them the $350. $350 is about avg. price for this deed. (Battery and Labor)

Your friend/neighbor, on the same day the dealer does the Aux ...can easily replace the Main battery that you can source locally. Or let dealer do both batteries.

I definitely would change out both the Main and Aux battery

Right now, you will probably have trouble sourcing/finding/buying an aftermarket Aux battery locally and when found you will pay $120+- for it. You will then need to buy fender flare clips that will cost you $15 +- and then have to get a friend that you can trust to research the install process and to do it properly and without to much fuss..

Again, your best bet is just to go to the dealer.. Most dealers will get approx. $750+- to changeout both the Main and Aux battery on a 3.6 JL.

In regard to my post above to Paige...

Normally on this forum I push for .. tell all (gals and guys) to do the Aux battery changeout and Main battery changout yourself. I even authored a forum thread on how to replace the Aux battery the easy way..

For this forum member... a gal and at a time when parts/batteries and such can be hard to source.... Well, I told gal that authored this thread/Paige..... what I would tell my Daughter or Sister who were hundreds/thousands miles away and I could not help/do the work for... find the batteries for...

I would say .... just pay the $750 and be done with it. You can't be fooling with this battery(s) thing and chance a no start situation.... being stranded on a dark road.... and or a towing bill and more. Just get it done at the dealer, now. The next time I will do the deed for you with aftermarket batteries... and while I'm at it I'll show you how to do it for yourself someday..

Hey Paige,

You can order everything directly from Genesis Offroad:

https://www.genesisoffroad.com/jl-dual-battery-kit

Click on the "Battery" tab at the bottom and it lists the batteries they sell for this set-up. There's an excellent step-by-step installation video on YouTube, or you can have a local Jeep shop install it. You would likely have to purchase it through them though. Most shops will not install customer supplied parts.

When I replaced my aux battery (before going with the Genesis set-up) it was around $90 from O'Rielly's for their platinum one. You can get one from any auto parts store though. It's easy to install. Check out the videos on YouTube for that as well. Definitely replace your main battery too though.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. Happy to help out!

@Pcw67

Please disregard any nonsensical suggestion(s) here that you install a $1200+ aftermarket dual battery system on your JL.

MOST JL / JT owner's do not need nor would they benefit from such an install.
And you still have to properly maintain that pricey set-up.. Most guys fail to realize this..

And stop throwing $ at the dealer, having them do load tests and yada yada. Just have the dealer change out both batteries now, pay the $750 (approx.) and go home.

Do on the forum, research dual battery systems on a JL.. YOU, depending on how much you use/drive your JL, may want to start using a decent battery tender/maintainer on your JL.
