Steamer on twill soft top.

So I bought a twill soft top that was left in a garage for mice or squirrels, or some damned thing to make a nest in, and it now smells like old piss. I’ve Febreezed the bejesus out of it, but it’s still there, just now with hints of lilac and fresh laundry. Anyone tried steam cleaning before? I have one of those little steamer jobs and thought that might do the trick, but don’t want to ruin anything.

Thinking really outside the box here...

Recently, one of our freeloaders cats missed the litter box and tinkled on the adjacent rug. The ammonia smell was fairly ripe, so I used our Hoover and a double dose of all-purpose cleaning solution on the affected area. That eliminated the offending scent entirely.

If you have a similar carpet cleaner that includes a hand-held scrubbing accessory, possibly a gentle pass or three with it on your soft top might have a similar, beneficial outcome. Test it first in an inconspicuous area.

Is it still waterproof? And is the smell on the interior or exterior?

Edit: If it's the exterior, I'd put it on and wash the jeep. If it's interior and not stained, I'd consider using an Ozone Generator (not a spray, a machine) Note: You cannot be in the jeep with the generator and need to air it out before driving, and there are risks that make this something to consider a pro for.

There are some carpet cleaners that are specifically made to get out pet urine and feces stains. Try some on a small area to make sure it doesn't discolor the top.

This is the correct answer. I used to do restoration work and ozone is the only thing that stands a chance at getting the smell out. Look for a local Fire and Water damage restoration company. They will have this equipment.

It’s on the inside and it doesn’t seem to be leaking, that I can see. I hit it with some antibacterial Febreeze but it’s still there vaguely.

I've always been told that steam will set the stain/odor in even more. At least that's what carpet cleaners say about dog urine. I'd definitely be sure before you take a steamer to it.

I have also used White Distilled Vinegar. Yes it stinks, sour smell, you have to let the item sit out for several days or a week or two pending your sense of smell to air out. Had a sedan trunk leak and didn't know it on a vehicle we didn't drive weekly or use the trunk hardly at all. But during that one time I used the trunk it was mildewed/moldy and wet. Pulled all the material liners out with padding. Let sit for a few days to dry out. Brushed off the mildew, with mask on. Saturated with vinegar a couple of days then let dry out. And the smell went away.

I have used the marine version of this in my boat with success. IIRC, similar to Ozone, it's not safe to be occupied during use.

At the gas station picking up lunch from the kitchen and got to park in the shade which allowed me to move stuff around enough to not be visible in pictures.

Experimenting with having mesh off on the drivers door, as I'm only keeping it on for passengers (human & canine).
