TL;DR: Has anyone ever mounted a spare tire hoist (like they have under the tail of pickup trucks and other SUV's) on their tire carrier to help lift a spare? Something similar to this, maybe:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/JSD-924-...7?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101422533

They had a feature in Jp Mag years ago where one of the editors had 37's on his JK and he used an ATV Winch to lift the tire (due to a motocross injury), then he would jockey it into position once it was close. That's expensive and requires extra power, But I was thinking maybe one of the hoists like this would be easier and more simple.

The 37's on my JLUR are HEAVY even when I'm healthy, but a recent shoulder injury has had me thinking about this concept a lot more.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

An assist of some kind would be cool i just have no idea where something like that could be mounted.

Not sure how the one you shared would help but would be open to seeing possibilities.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. With my stature, age, and health issues, I just can't pick up my 37" tire/wheel and put it on the carrier.

It's a low priority, mainly because, there are many things I need to work on, and I'm almost always wheeling with my best friend, and he's a big guy, but has similar skeletal health issues. But it's easy enough for the two of us to mount a tire on the carrier.

So, I looked at many hand winch type mechanisms, with an eye toward compactness and light weight. The latest idea was to use one of these "trailer ratchets" that semi-trucks use for the straps to anchor cars and cargo. Of course, I'd have to make a boom and use cable/dyneema rope, etc. My tire carrier is a Teraflex and has some obvious points of attachment to use for this.

Well, you could do a bumper designed for a spare tire swing mount. Instead of using the spare tire mount essentially mount a simple manual crane that swings. Imagine this without the feet, vertical support on a pivot point:

Exactly the concept I had in mind, made from aluminum tube and using that truck trailer ratchet with a 1/8" dyneema synthetic rope. My goal would be to be able to stash it in the cubby.

Interesting thread. Thanks for posting. I'll keep watching.

We've had too many sets of too large tire/wheels. Time to find a solution. I'm interested.

I find it easier to lift the tire onto the back than I do replacing a drive wheel.

This is a fantastic idea and a great starting point.

Exactly what I was looking for- thanks for posting this. I think I may have to do some research

My Jeep is my daily driver and I drive to/ from the trail. I'm not leaving home without it.

If you put your purse on the ground and use both arms it's a lot easier....

Honestly though, that drill powered hoist the guy rigged up was pretty awesome. That could be a pretty lucrative product to market and sell!

Here you go Scott. Throw one of these in the back while traveling. Just roll up, spin, straddle, lift just little and set on lugs. ??

My tire/wheel combination weighs close to 115 lbs. Awkward as hell. At 68, I'm just looking for a solution that doesn't involve my back being f...kd up and I end up eating red jello earlier than expected.
