LOL, right? And someone wore glitter. Glitter. GLITTER!!!! Sparkle here and sparkle there - were they slaughtering unicorns up in this JL!? I felt heard when Carvana offered to reimburse me for the cleaning supplies - I feel good about it now (and can laugh) but for the amount I dished out for this beast . . . That interior, should have been spotless! Not one grain or glint of glitter anywhere . . . Anyways . . . I am very pleased with the elbow grease and sweat equity I put into cleaning it . . . Very proud and some really great cleaning products out there! Who knew? Carvana sure the eff didn't . . . But I too wondered if it was really chocolate? Yeah, that's definitely not a party I want to attend . . . When I found sprinkles under the mats and in crevices, I felt it was definitely chocolate . . . It's definitely chocolate, right!?

I agree that we used some different methods in the old days to achieve stellar results! One of the installers I worked with shunned the DMM method for years until we started to play a game during installs, to see if we could set the gains by ear and then with a meter to see if we were "leaving any signal on the table". In most cases (like 19 out of 20 times) we were almost always within a fraction of an amp of to what the manufacturer said we should be. Fact is, if you've got a good ear, and know what distortion sounds like, you'll be fine. I've got a DD-1+ and a TPI-440 oscilloscope along with a Fluke 87 V meter and will use some or all to set up an amp "correctly".
Man, I don’t even know what a DD whatchyamcallit and a TPI thing is. ?

The TPI-440 is a handheld oscilloscope and a DD-1+ is a handheld distortion detector that you can use to set the gains in a system. Some things are easier now, and some are more difficult!

Absolutely, with the stipulation that I don't like the super cold weather that you guys have up north so we will have to hang out at my house!
Done! I’ve got my shades ready for the sun! ?

You know that scene in Bettlejuice, when the character says reading The Handbook For The Recently Deceased is like reading stero instructions, that's exactly how I feel right now . . .

@Ghostwolf

I forget what sub you plan on doing. Were you going to do the powered Kicker that @TheBirdie72 mentioned?

I’ve almost got my sub/amp installed (just need to connect the power/ground to my amp and install the power fuse at the battery). Just waiting on a hydraulic crimper (I used to use a linesman pliers ?) and a Jokari tool to help strip the larger wires (for the life of me I can’t use my razor as I keep cutting strands of wire).

I did tap into my factory sub wires as @lashlee suggested, but have read others here have used the rear speaker wire successfully as they claim it is full range. Getting to the sub wires was a tad more work.

What exactly is confusing you as I’m sure someone will be able to help?

Ultimately, I'm just really out of my element here . . . I appreciate all the ideas and pointers and the discussion but think I need to hold off and purchased a prefabricated kit (like the OEM Audio + kit) - Detailed instructions and vids and everything you need vs trying to do it myself - I played around the other day, with fade and the new upgraded dash and roll bar speakers - got a good vibe going - also splurged for knee speakers (6.5 woofers) - really think that's all the punch I'm gonna need and won't have to tap or power anything and that'll last me (hopefully) until the kit gets cheaper or I've whored myself out enough to pay for it . . .

Greetings,

So I'm going to be attempting to install a Kicker hideaway 46HS10 system this weekend. I"m kind of confused now on what wires I should be trying to tap into however. I have the upgraded alpine system and was planning to tapping into the wires that others have called out in the apillar going up to the surround bar. I have replaced those speakers with the MBquart 6x9 kit but all other speakers and sub in the back is stock. I do plan on adding terra accoustics in front but that will be all after this sub. Instead of those wires in the pillar do I need to find the sub wire going to the back and tap into that so that they both get same single? thanks!

I’m going to finish my install tonight and can let you know how it sounds from both the sub wire and the rear speaker wire (I’ll tap both and test both). I’ll hopefully report back tonight.

Awesome, thanks man!
So I ran into a few hiccups with the install: 1. My new hydraulic crimper wouldn’t let go of my lug, so I spent awhile trying to figure that out.
2. I was getting no audio when I tried it out. After rechecking things multiple times and 15 minutes later I realized I put the RCA’s into the amp preout. ??

With that said, I just finished and didn’t have time to test both locations. I can say, however, that even at very low volume that the JL Audio Stealthbox was bumpin’ tapped into the Alpine sub wires (I am still going to test at the rear speaker wires to see if that will work, but probably not until after I get the sub and amp tuned, so that may take awhile, but will report back here).

The sub wires are in a plethora of wires located in a harness by the passenger door sill (I have a four door, so the rear passenger for me). Shoot, what a mess, but here’s where I tapped in (you can see the black harness that I cut open and temporarily attached posi-taps)….

I tapped into sub 1 (+ and -) and sub 2 (+ and -). Just look for the twisted wires as they are the ones you want. Then it’s easy to color match…

And yes…I have a lot of power wire. I’ll be cutting that off and using it to attach to one of these for a future amp/sub ?…
