Seriously? I would have thought having a mismatched tire on the axle that steers would be worse.

If I was in @jlrockfly's situation I'd have that spare shaved to somewhat match the others.
Yup, that's what I originally thought as well. Similar situation on my 37" KO2s after I had to replace one of my set (I would have done a pair, but I've got a bit of an odd situation with a set of 8 matching including the trailer and I lost a trailer tire/wheel to sheered studs mid trip). 20k ish on the remaining Jeep tires when I tried it.

Very bad push to the opposite side of the tire when installed on the rear. Lasted a week or so and had a four tire rotation done to put the same pair on the front. No directional issues after.

I believe it was due to the open diff driving the newer tire with more torque than the "smaller" worn tire.

FWIW another Jeep I was with gouged his sidewall on the same obstacle but had a tire warranty with Americas Tire (Discount Tire in our area). They replaced it no additional charge under warranty, no questions asked about how or where it occurred.

Personally I wouldn't worry about that, even if it were that on my wifes rig, I wouldn't replace it. Had much larger ones on my rig and my only concern was how they flexed when aired down on rocks, made sure they were not getting any bigger.

Eventually when time came, it got rotated and became a full time spare but it had gouges and chunks missing.

Thanks, it looked worse when flexing on rocks but fully inflated it’s barely visible and there is no air leak

Hi, last weekend I did cut one of my ko2s with a sharp rock on the sidewall. I am a bit concerned about it but not sure if it’s fixable, a replacement is needed or I can use it like this

If damaged, can I swap it with the spare? It has 20k miles and spare is new. I want to eventually replace them with 37 (this are oem 35 from the XR trim)

thanks!
Push on it and take another picture. It looks like just a flesh wound to me though...I would just continue ops normal. I would compare the depth of your spare to your 4 tires in use using a tread depth gauge. Going forward I would rotate all 5 tires if you either get a new set, or the tread depth is not that far off...that's a whole other tire to get more mileage out of before it runs out of time, or gets completely sun-checked just hanging out on the back of your Jeep.

not really an issue. belt isnt compromised at all. you cant even see the belt. if its holding air youre good. if it bothers you swap it out with the spare. should have been rotating that spare in the whole time.

K0s seem to have rather weak sidewalls. or at least the load C do.

So honest question, you guys would be ok ok running either of these tires. First pic mine, 2nd pic OPs? Maybe I am paranoid without a reason. I wouldn’t and don’t like having a damaged spare.

I bought this at the recommendation of a friend. I haven't needed it yet, but he bought his kit after a buddy cut the sidewall of a 37" so bad on Day 1 of a week in Big Bend that the tire completely deflated. Said his buddy patched it up with this kit, reinflated, and had no issue all week.

I have that kit but I personally don’t see it as a permanent solution. Again maybe I’m uninformed on what really constitutes sidewall damage.

The OP's original photos showed just a thin cut to the sidewall. In his new photos, as well as yours, the problem is you have a chunk of the outer ply missing, so the inner sidewall ply is now more vulnerable to the next hit. On pavement you might be fine for 50,000 miles. Offroad, you've increased the odds that the next rock to scrape the tire can now scrape that inner layer and pop the sidewall. I've run with small chunks of the outer ply missing for thousands of miles with no issues. Larger ones, it's a judgment call.

I believe @wibornz ran his tires for some thousands of miles with a much worse looking gash in the sidewalls; it eventually gave out one day and he had to replace the tire.

I put about 14,000 miles on this tire before it failed. I did this in February of 23, and the tire failed in December of 23. I was surprised at how long it lasted. When it failed, It just gradually lost air. Of course it failed while I was about 60 miles from home out running trails. I put the spare on and then continued on.
