You mean like this?

I put about 14,000 miles on this tire before it failed. I did this in February of 23, and the tire failed in December of 23. I was surprised at how long it lasted. When it failed, It just gradually lost air. Of course it failed while I was about 60 miles from home out running trails. I put the spare on and then continued on.
So do you think I overreacted when I replaced mine because of the damage in my pic above? I want to err on the side of caution, but I don’t want to be foolish either.

That is why I run Load Range "E" tires for that little added assurance

FWIW another Jeep I was with gouged his sidewall on the same obstacle but had a tire warranty with Americas Tire (Discount Tire in our area). They replaced it no additional charge under warranty, no questions asked about how or where it occurred.
I purchase the certificates from discount tire for this very reason. If the tire can’t be repaired it will be replaced under the coverage. You can even buy for the oem tires that come on a new vehicle. I have the ko2 315 tires.

Good info about OEM tires, I didn’t know that

I think you should make decisions on based on your risk tolerance. I have a high tolerance to risk.

I don’t think you overreacted. When my tire failed, I bought four new Micky Thompson tires and mounted them. Then used one of the tires with 30,000 miles on them as a spare. I will remount those tires after the four new tires wear out. I typically go through a new set of tire about every 18 months.

I'm kinda freaked out by this whole conversation. Apparently my risk tolerance is low. I just keep thinking that looks like a potential catastrophic blowout at highway speed followed by a rollover. Best of luck to all you gamblers!

The rubber carcass does not provide the structure as much as the belts do.
