Hi! Newbie here with a 2018 JL that I love. Just got 8” of new snow in Minnesota... so threw it (well, wrestled it... still working on that) into 4WD. The knob indicator said 4L (down and to the right) but the indicator in the dashboard said 4H. Why the discrepancy? (Not afraid to be called out as an idiot... )

My guess is that you don't actually have it in 4L. What speeds are traveling? You will know pretty quickly if it's in 4H or 4L once you get moving.

Not in 4L, the shift knob would be more to the right and on a slight angle. You need to pull to the right of where you are and then pull down. Do so at a rolling speed to make it easier

Wow. Thanks for quick responses. I was going about 19 mph and immediately got traction. Got up the driveway on first try (hasn’t happened until I did this). Sounds like I may need to go do some more shifting practice.

BTW, it’s not nearly as easy to get it in gear as my previous Wrangler. Is that common?

You don't need 4L for 8" of snow - you're driving a tank! Maybe if it was more like 18". :giggle:

Yes, the 2018+ Wrangler re-implemented the Front Axle Disconnect (FAD). Shifts are harder as the synchro and interlock activate (difficulty increases with vehicle speed).

Yes it will get easier. Mine was pretty tight but it's really easy now. Ok, I just read that so no comment guys.
