Hello -
I saw some posts about this topic but wanted to put my mod here for anyone thinking of changing our their manual shift knob. I installed a 20+ year old Rocknob (for got it for my '99TJ many years ago). The install went pretty smooth and I ended up doing the transfer case as well. Just a few points and tips I learned:
I saw some posts about this topic but wanted to put my mod here for anyone thinking of changing our their manual shift knob. I installed a 20+ year old Rocknob (for got it for my '99TJ many years ago). The install went pretty smooth and I ended up doing the transfer case as well. Just a few points and tips I learned:
- Use a plastic prybar and hammer for the shifter - have a little patience and the knob pops right off, keep an eye out for the spring.
- I did not like the aftermarket adapters since they add a lot of height. I 3d printed a 1.5" long adapter to fit inside the 0.625" bore of the rocknob collar and ~0.550" bore to create and tight fit to the shifter (you could spin it up on a lathe, but I added the D-shape for the upper shifter shaft (~0.330") so it will not rotate). The entire assembly sits tight over the shift lockout. I can send details of the 3d file if anyone is interested.
- I cut the spring to about 1/2" and it fit between the red lockout ring and the underside of the shifter knob. The knob and adapter bottom out on the shaft so you just need to trim the spring and bend the cut end to make sure there there is enough lockout travel. Once dialed-in, the spring is totally hidden since the Rocknob collar nests inside that red cup by about 1/8" but still leaves enough space to tighten the 3 mounting set screws.
- The transfer case was prety easy and no special adapter required, it fit right in with the supplier spacer adapter. There are a number of write ups to remove the factory knob and boot - that is required (it does not pop off like the shifterknob).
- I ended up getting a set for my '21 Gladitor, same install (no surprises or differnces on the JT)
