I'm thinking about shackle hitch receiver and I'm a little hesitant. I wanted to throw this out there and see what everybody thought.

The factory tow hitch is rated for 3500lbs. I don't know the exact weight of a JLUR, but it seems to be over 4000lbs. Is it smart to use the stock hitch that's rated for 3500lbs as a recovery point? I would also imagine that a kinetic rope would add more peak weight than the 4,000lbs as well initially.

I like the idea of a shackle hitch receiver, but something is telling me that it may not be a great idea.

I never use the hitch as a recovery point. To many thongs can go wrong. Although the shackle could be rated for a higher weight, the pin may not be. The factory installed recovery points are the only thing I use. They are attached directly to the frame.

That's kind of my thought too. But I was also thinking that the rear recovery point is more likely for the jeep to be pulled more on one side, possibly causing it to slip or slide in a direction you don't want it to.

I also agree with what you said about the hitch pin. I feel like there's a lot that could happen, but yet it seems like a popular recovery point that people use.

Whatever you do, if you decide to use a hitch receiver, make sure you use one that's meant for recovery, like a factor 55. There was a death recently where someone used a trailer hitch as a recovery point and it broke out and flew straight at the driver killing him instantly. I also recommend taking a recovery training course if you have one in your area. I just took one and it was 100% worth the money.

There’s infinite variations on recoveries. Not all are extremely difficult. I prefer to have as many options for attachment points and angles of applied force as I can.

Insofar as the strength, take a look at the fasteners for the receiver and the recovery hook; that will give you some information.

A loaded 4 door will be pushing or exceeding 6k#.

At the end of the day there are 2 onjectives when it comes to recoveries. 1. Get the vehicle out of the situation it is in. 2. Do it safely.

Always make sure you are aware of your tow capability. The first time I got my Gladiator stuck it took 2 JLUs to pull me out of a mud hole because of the weight of my truck. Like others have said there are many options for recovery, what is going to work best is based on the specific scenario. Like Jim said above, look at the difference in hardware used to attach the hitch and recovery point to the frame.....it says alot.

The JLU's tow rating is 3,500 pounds and not specifically the receiver, right?

I'm fairly sure that that's the result of a lot of factors, including braking, suspension, vehicle length, laws, maximum speeds allowed while towing, lawyers, etc. The limits of the receiver are buried in there somewhere, but I'm thinking that they're not an overall limiting factor.

correct EU versions have a towing limit of 5500lbs, they have a mandatory speed limit while towing though, I think of 55mph.

You have proper recovery points. Why play the Darwin games? Shock loads can easily exceed 4000lbs.

I guess you can buy the proper gear and have it as a last resort kind of thing.

Aren't they rated for ~8,000 pounds?
