Seems to me that, objectively:

  • A front diff cover should be made of welded carbon steel that (when bashed on a rock) might deform. Or it might survive a hit. By contrast, aluminum or nodular iron might fail, since they’re strong but more brittle (iron) or light and good at cooling (milled aluminum). The front pumpkin is the lowest hanging metal thing, and it goes first. It leads. It’s like the bulbous bow sitting below the waterline of a gigantic ocean-going ship. Yet less is asked of the gear oil up front, and thus less is asked of the cooling.
  • A rear diff cover will primarily hit rocks at the rim (or on the drain plug… but I digress). Yet much is asked of the gear oil back there, and thus much is asked of the cooling. It should be made of nodular iron, perhaps.
You only ever see these things marketed in identical pairs, though.

Seems to me most vehicles should have dissimilar metals, front vs. back. The functional requirements are inherently dissimilar.

Am I wrong?

having had AEV diff covers on my JKUR's and my power wagon and at some point if I keep my JLUR will install them o it as well. I have to say if a person breaks a AEV diff cover probably nothing else survived either.

Is it a rhetorical question?
Do we have to buy matching diff covers?
I know my irrational need for symmetry requires me to.

I have Motobilt diff covers with Next Venture diff skids front and rear. For symmetry and my mental well-being. 🤓

Not entirely. Most vehicles have two different windshield wipers. Very little is actually symmetrical, when you get right down to it.

I could use some new diff covers in the next 48 hours, and I was curious what people thought about mismatching them.

I’m leaning towards the Spicer nodular iron, certainly in the rear. Probably both. But the ARBs are nice too.

I’m just stopping to appreciate that functionally they do different things, front vs. rear.

I bought a Jeep just because both windshield wipers were the same length. You are right of course about symmetry. Other than aesthetics, I suppose there is little reason for them to match. Me personally I would be bothered but not for any logical reason.

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
For an off road vehicle, both manufacturing (related to cost) and for the consumer, you want as many part matches as possible. Having a left and right, or front and rear, version means carrying more spares. I wish we only needed a couple u-joints and two axles to cover front rear and right left.

Differentials made of steel are cooler running than iron think of an iron skillet. Milled aluminum is even cooler but not as strong.

Well, the red ARB ones are tasty. NGL. They also 100% match my OEM rubi shocks, which should make everybody’s OCD happy.

Good point about the spares. I totally respect people who tow a teardrop yet go to the extra effort of getting vehicle-matched wheels (so they carry 1:6 spares, rather than 2:6 spares). That’s a good point.

I was going to do just the black aFe rear... But their package deal with front & rear + fluid for Black Friday '23 was just too good of a price so I went that route instead.

My wife wanted red, but I talked her into the black since I knew we would be ditching the red Rubicon shocks.

I like the fact they're aluminum for better heat dissipation, but at the same time quite beefy and have taken some good scrapes (my wife has a knack for finding the tallest pointiest rocks on the trail and aiming straight for them).
