I did a forum search and wasn't able to find an answer, before that becomes a thing.

My wife just got a 2018 JLU and it only came with one key. We got a quote from the dealer for a replacement and its came in at $260 programed and cut.

Im wondering if there are other options anyone has already tried?

Ive looked at Ebay, and other sites, and can find an unprogrammed and uncut key. The dealer said they would try and program it but they've had mixed success with doing that in the past. They also said it was $99 to cut it.

That would put the aftermarket key, cut and programmed, around $ 150. But there is a chance it doesnt work.

Im hoping someone here has a better way about this since my googlefu is apparently weak.

In the same boat but my new 2021 was delivered with only 1 key From the factory. Trying to get a new one is a pain and costs too much. Saving a few bucks on a key is not something I am gonna do. I had a cheap key stashed on my JKUR. But I will get a mopar 2nd key and pay the $300.

Your new Jeep should be coming with two fobs. If you only got one, it is likely due to the chip shortage, and the dealer owes you one. I would ask them to order it at their expense. Also, if you ever go to trade it in or sell it, the expectation will be that you have two.

If it was me, I'd go for the OEM key and fob. Maybe not bought from the dealer, but I'd let them cut/program it. If you get an aftermarket, it could work but may not last or the range might be poor. everything you do with a vehicle requires you to have access to it, keys are probably the one place I wouldn't skimp.

?I’m so old I remember when we had these funny little metal things you stuck in a hole in the dash. When you turned it clockwise the. engine would start. Never had a battery fail on one either…. Seriously though on a new rig I’d go with the factory key. Yeah, it’s more expensive, but you know it’ll work and it will last. There are things in this life you can take the cheap route on, but I don’t think this is one of them. If you were to depend on it and it failed you could be in for a “walk”. Not worth it to me.

You might want to consider buying a Jeep OEM remote start upgrade if you don't already have it. It will come with 2x new key fob's and you keep your existing fob(s) (it/ they still work just no remote start). The kit is $395 list but you can get it lower when FCA runs discount specials on accessories. Labor to install and program is ~ 1hr. (typically around $150), assuming you have the required harness already installed - dealer can check with your VIN.

she already has it, sorta wish she didnt now though since that would have been a very cost effective way to do this.
