Regrets?

Just made the switch from a manual JL to an Xtreme Recon with the 8AT. No regrets here. The auto is really good, and the manual was not a great manual. It’s fun to shift your own gears, but this auto is as good as any and makes it a better performer on and off road. Definitely give it a chance, and I think you’ll stay around for the XR ?

I had to give up my three-pedal therapy (Miatas) due to a shoulder injury. The posters above are correct in saying this auto transmission is truly fantastic.

It does have a manual option that we use on off-reading descents.

PS: Tuscadero is an awesome color.

Well thank you for this I am literally amazed how many of you all love the automatic transmission the Zf8 and how much good things you all say about especially using it off road I wasn’t expecting this at all

Pin both engines and the 4cylinder doesnt have much left after 70. I could feel the difference. However, off the line and around town the 2.0 is better.

I got my Tuscadero jl a few weeks ago. I love the color. I also was seriously thinking about a Gladiator. I drove manual for a lot of years and got an automatic this time. For the rare times my husband will drive it he has bad knees and doesn't want to drive with a clutch anymore. I am still getting used to the automatic. I continue to try to clutch when I slow down. I have also turned it off in drive without putting it in park more than once. The automatic drives great, but I miss the way driving a manual feels.

I don’t understand why everyone getting a new Jeep wouldn’t get a 4xe. I can’t imagine someone who actually drives one wouldn’t fall in love with the speed and power.

I know with the new automatics there is no dipstick to check the transmission fluid that worries me, plus you have the added cost of changing the automatic transmission fluid as well and automatic transmissions are more expensive to repair than a manual. So what do you think I should do, any advice greatly appreciated

This is what the Wrangler owners manual says about the automatic transmission regarding fluid changes: Fluid And Filter Changes Under normal operating conditions, the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle. Routine fluid and filter changes are not required. However, change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, etc.), or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.

Kind of a no brainer over the manual as you know clutches do wear out. I requested a manual in my '92 Dodge Dakota as I love manuals and thought it would be better off road. Actually I would be able to drive slower off road with an automatic than a manual unless I'm slipping the clutch which isn't that great for the clutch.

Then, with just over 100,000 miles I had to replace the clutch and pressure plate. Not real fun doing it yourself but doable. The traffic in my area got much worse in the years I owned the truck so the constant pushing in the clutch in rush hour traffic got less and less enjoyable.

I'm still doing ATF service every 50k miles, even the ZF manufacturer recommends it, and it's pretty cheap insurance (if you follow the FSM procedure). I like this AT so much that I want it to last a REAL lifetime, not just past the warranty
