I'm finishing up regearing my m186 front, kept the open carrier and just swapped to 4.56, and after putting everything together I found this small metal rod on the ground underneath where I've been working. It looks broken off on one end. I checked my carrier and the roll pin is still there (and doesn't look like this anyway).

Can't tell if it fell off a tool or something in the diff from all my dead blow hammering to get the carrier in. Any ideas?

Chevymitchell could tell you if it's part of your differential.

That doesn't look like anything out of your diff man.

That's what I like to hear, thanks. I have completely disassembled an open diff carrier before so didn't think so, but this gearing project has been a bit of a nightmare so the reassurance is appreciated!

@chevymitchell - This is my last question, I promise!
That’s def not a piece of your diff. The only thing that remotely looks like that is the pin that holds the spider gear dowel in. You’re good to go, for sure.

I have done several Jeep axles, gears you name it and I don't recognize that. Here ya go, I am buttoning it up for a client and I don't see that anywhere, nor does it job my memory... This is HIS Front Axle!

Thank you all so much for your help -- I think I found the source; one of my dead blow hammers has a hole in it that matches the pin size. Drove the Jeep and nothing exploded so I think it's good :like:
