Hey all,
I’ve had my 6 speed hours for about 3 months and love it. but as i’ve read in numerous forums, the gearing is a little wack. i run 33s and find it difficult to keep any power in 5th gear even on the highway and am not a huge fan of how short 1st gear is (except when crawling). i was looking into a regeat down the line a bit and was wondering what has worked best for others with similar setups and such?

I agree that 5th gear is about useless in my two door Rubi. I find myself skipping to 6th on the regular. I just ordered a new Jeep (4-door this time) with 4.88 gears and I plan to put 35’s on almost immediately. I will be driving at elevation regularly and will sometimes pull a trailer. I will let you know how it turns out!

You realize lower gears will make 1st gear (and 2-6) even shorter?

Can't have it both ways with the gear swap. You would need to change the transmission ratios itself. The regearing everyone does is just for final ratios. The individual 1st, 2nd etc gears are mathematically set in the transmission.

Going to 4.88's for example would likely help you regain the top gears around town more. The trade off, is your 1st and 2nd gear get even shorter.

People are cool with that when increasing tire size, as that actually helps offset the shortening. Bigger tire to rotate, the shorter gearing assists. Since Jeep people all want bigger tires, everyone talks about regearing to assist in moving them over the stock configurations.

Does that make sense?

With the double overdrive ratios, I say gear it super low. 5.13-5.38’s will mean 2nd gear take offs unless on a hill or towing will be easy. Still plenty of top gearing for freeway speed and you can just treat 1st like an old granny gear, skip it 90% of the time. Ours is an auto, so the regear was much less necessary. After 2+ years on 37’s, and then 6 months on 38’s we decided to regear. Went all the way from 4.10’s to 5.38’s. Definitely lower than necessary, but if I’m going might as well jump in the deep end. Lost 1-1.5mpg on the freeway, but the 100+ to 1 crawl ratio is amazing.

This. I agree with the original poster that 1st is too low in the manual for street driving. I am hoping 4.88 with 35’s will allow me to skip 1st most of the time, and make 5th (and probably 6th) more important. There is a rarely a situation where 5th seems appropriate to gain or maintain speed.

I just treat mine like a 5 speed right now. I’m waiting for sales to grab a front locker and 4.56 ring/pinion sets. Then, as @Zandcwhite suggested I’ll just take off in 2nd most of the time. 5.13’s on stock rubicon tires were stupid bad in 1st gear when I traded in. I hope they changed their mind and did a MOPAR lift and 37’s before trying to sell it.

Thanks for the detailed reply, this is what i was looking for in terms of an answer. Will probably just hold off until i get bigger tires in the future becuase for what I do, 33s make the most sense.
