I am need of some kind of spray to keep rodents away from my cars. Just noticed some arsehole have chewed the insulation under the hood. Before they chew on any of the harnesses I need a remedy. Can anyone recommend a tried and tested one? there are dozens on amazon, just not sure which works best.

I believe the culprits are squirrel but could be mice as well.

Peppermint oil is supposed to work. I had mice getting into my motorhome and tried everything else - dryer sheets, ultrasonic noise makers, Irish Spring soap. People swear by Irish Spring soap....little ba$tards ATE the soap.

I had them building nests in my engine compartment. I was skeptical, but a few dryer sheets have kept them away.

I would try this and peppermint oil first.

We had a specialty vehicle that kept getting victimized by rodents, even though it was parked in a sea of vehicles that suffered no damage. It had to be towed to the shop twice in less than 18 months due to rodents eating through the wiring harnesses. Very expensive repairs. As it turns out, the wires are ”eco-friendly” with coatings derived from soy. What a great idea…unless you have an emergency vehicle that lives in the real world and needs to be deployable on short notice

We tried everything but peppermint oil. Had traps and poison/bait all over the place and adhesive trap-pads on the tops of the tires. It didn’t work. When the wires are coated with food the only solution is secure indoor storage and cats.

+1...and in our experience, queens (i.e., female cats) are observably better mousers than are toms. That said, the males that we've owned have always been excellent birdcatchers.

I use this once a month and ever since have not seen any mice footprints under the hood.

I use this ^^^^, but I enhance it with this https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Truth-Aromatherapy-Essential-Peppermint/dp/B00X47GZOG?th=1 (also available at our local CVS)
I add about 8 additional drops and give it a good shake before spraying. My rodent problem went away.
Bonus: my driveway area smells 'minty' ;)

If you keep it in a garage, get a cat and leave the door to the garage open, keep litter box in the garage. IF a rodent tries to get in, it’ll get digested. But they will smell the threat and stay away.

Let them crap all over a freshly hand-washed vehicle just once, and check back in with me. ;)
In our little culdesac a few years ago, we got a bunch of House Wrens that moved in the schrubs around the houses. They would sit on the door sil and peck at the side mirrors on all the cars in the neighborhood. Their spit would foul the mirrors so bad, you couldn't see. Everyone was putting bags on their mirrors. They seem to have moved on to somewhere else. But it was ugly while they were around.

Something to remember is that your car insurance policy may cover damage from rodents under the "comprehensive" umbrella. They covered my old car a few years ago when I had a rat chew through a bunch of wiring.

Alternate way to get rid of rodents is to break a glass light bulb into a small jar of peanut butter and add a little antifreeze. Stir it all around and leave under the hood.
