Genius! This worked perfectly and i am enjoying the MUCH quieter ride. The weight of the 37' spare was cause the gate to rub the gasket differently (and loudly)...it's silent now. Thanks!!
Talk about thread revival! But glad you did... just ordered some of the 3M tape but will use the dish-soap option if the tape doesn't quite do the trick.

The body shop tech at my dealer put 3M anti-squeak tape along the top edge of my tailgate. To my amazement, it worked. The noise I was experiencing was loud and maddening. This was a 10 minute job and worth the dealer trip...Good Luck!
See, the benefit of driving the old XJs (95 and 99) is that you don't hear those noises because the XJs had to be purchased with an anti-squeak kit that no one ever got. So everything in the vehicle squeaked or rattled.

LOL Squeaks and rattles (used to) drive me bonkers. That being said I am far more accepting of such trivialities with the Jeep than I thought I could be. Not so say I won't try to limit squeaks/rattles/etc insofar as possible, but for a vehicle with removable doors and roof I wasn't expecting a super-quiet ride. But still gotta say the JL is pretty quiet... until you drive over 65, then it gets a bit noisy.

Yeah. I had a 95 XJ, I currently have a 99 XJ, then about 3 years ago I got an 02 TJ, then a year ago a 13 JK, and now my JL with my XJ. The JL seems like a luxury car in the noise department in comparison to the XJ and TJ :CWL:

@TRAILZPLZ

I found the dish soap worked well, but after a couple of weeks I would need to reapply... SO..... I started using bulb grease instead of dish soap. The bulb grease lasts for months and months and works grest. 8-)

Look closely at the large gasket along the bottom of hatch window. You will notice a very deep part of the gasket.... that deep part is where say a 1/4" of your painted rear tailgate's upper edge goes into. It is there where you need to use the bulb grease. Do all the way across ...apply in that deep part. After you get it applied wipe off the heavy stuff so, down the road you do not lean against it.... get it on your clothes. etc.

If the anti-squeak tape doesn't do the trick, will give this a try. Thanks @Rhinebeck01

Same here! The first two weeks with my JL drove me insane trying to figure out how to quiet all the little rattles. Being my first jeep, I was used to a really quiet ride of an Xterra and I found any little thing annoying. Now 8 months later I really don't notice any of them at all. I almost forgot about the tailgate noise until I saw this post... I guess the radio is too loud to notice :)

Ah... the Xterra. Loved those! It was a sad day when they stopped production. Tried doing a '15 Frontier Pro-4X but it just wasn't the same. But the Jeep has surpassed the X in almost every way (noise NOT being one of those however).

Me too! I held out for a few years waiting to see if they were going to start production on the next generation, but it never came to be. Not that I am complaining though.. I love my Jeep. I've already had it on some trails that my X probably would have needed some serious help to get through.

Absolutely amazing stuff. Virtually invisible (completely invisible with the tailgate closed). Applied it this morning and the tailgate was completely and utterly silent. Not. A. Peep! (no, not the yummy little yellow marshmallow kind)

After a quick wipe with alcohol, I applied the top edge of the tape to the top edge of the tailgate and smoothed the rest over the inside lip. Unless you are really looking for it you won't see it. If you see the picture below you only faintly see some air bubbles that should pass with time, but it's on the inside of the tailgate so I don't really care.

I don't understand why the factory doesn't do this. This just might be my best upgrade to date... or at least on par with the Sunrider :like:

A big vote of thanks to @Vegvisir66 for his post mentioning the tape that his dealer put on. I had no clue this stuff existed.

I purchased a 0.5" x 5 yard roll of 3M 5430 PTFE/UHMW anti-squeak tape for about $20 on Amazon. Have plenty to spare in case it needs to be renewed from time to time.

Bumping this thread because out of nowhere after 4 months of ownership, the rear of the Jeep has been creaking for the last week. Can’t wait to try all the suggestions out and shut up the creaks!
