Hey! Give him a break. I was also hit pretty hard and it took a lot of looking to discover if anything was damaged or not on my Jeep.

Has anyone had their JL rear-ended on the road? I have 33s and the reinforced tailgate, and I’m trying to figure out where to look for damage.

I’m pretty sure that the car that hit me mostly hit the spare tire. (I can’t say I love that about the design). It was a pretty hard hit, so what should I inspect most-carefully that wouldn’t be obvious?
Take it to a good body shop. They will be able to see things we dont

It looks like your tailgate might be sagging a little. But, I think only a Jeep Repair Expert can be trusted with a diagnosis like that.

Yep, as others have mentioned, the best thing to do is contact insurance and take it to a body shop.

As others have stated there may be (and often is...) unseen damage.

If you are just looking too see what is visible that may escape a casual glance though, you can use an led light preferably something wand style and shine it on the panels as you walk around (works best in a garage). Watch the reflection and see if it has any weird warping that doesn't match the normal panel lines (flat should not show a distorted reflection). You can take the spare tire carrier off and check the tail gate. If you want, you can probably tell without doing so though just by looking at the gaps between the panels when it is closed.

I am not an expert, but that looks like it will buff right out. Contact insurance, use the money to buy some clear coat safe rubbing compound, clean it up a bit and then polish/wax/done.

You won’t have any damage…the damage on the BMW is to an extremely vulnerable part of that car.

I backed into a tree (straight on/middle of spare) while overlanding last summer. Fully expected damage but there was none. I do have the Mopar carrier kit which reinforces the tire mount…that might of helped.

Yup, had my tailgate pushed in. new spare rim, tailgate, rear bumper, tire carrier paint job. the rear roll pan was ever so slightly buckled from the tailgate bottom edge and weather stripping. I couldn't remove my scissor jack. I drove it for 2 months like that till I could get it in the body shop. I was amazed that a bare tailgate is only 17 pounds.
Any idea on how difficult and costly it was to have the rear of the tub replaced? The section below the tailgate where your scissor jack sat.

I didn't have to have mine replaced so I cant say. It was pushed in enough so I couldn't get my jack out, they pulled that out no problem. New tailgate, spare tire mount. spare rim, trailer hitch and bumper. $4500 plus medical for whiplash $5500 in the end.
