I bought this 2023 jl beach edition with the reckon package brand new … I love it . I just put a 3.5 lift on it because I want to put 37 or 38 tires on it to take it to the trails sometimes…
The shop that put the lift told me I have to regear before buying the tires … other shop I went to told me that the 4.56 gear the jeep has will handle the 37 with no problem…. So they told me only regear if I go with 38 or bigger tires …
Should I regear anyway or not ?

Only you can answer that. 4.56 and 35s are a near perfect match. I'm on 35s with 4.88s and I'm over-geared, but my next set of tires will likely be 37s and the 4.88s will be perfect. 4.56 gears on 37s or 38 would probably feel under-geared to me. But that is me. Your perception may differ.

Get the tires you want. See if you still like the Jeep's performance on the 4.56s. If yes, you saved $2.5K on a re-gear. If no, it's worth the $2.5K to get the Jeep you want under you.

If you're looking for bigger tires (37's + ) regearing would be the best option. Especially if you plan on offroading! It's better to be safe than sorry. We do have a regear special going on that will save you some money and a possible blown up rear end.

What engine and transmission do you have? Where do you drive? How much on road vs off road? What kind of off road driving will you be doing? Overall, what are you looking to get out of the Jeep.

All of these questions need to be answered to give you the right answer. And usually, the answer is never black-or-white.

Honestly, for 37s and east coast wheeling where you want a little wheel speed, 4.56 may be a good gear. For rock crawling out west, maybe not.

And then there's the complication of the 8 speed automatic making 2 or 3 ratios "good enough" for a lot of people.

Lots of gray area out there.

And a lot of people with a vested interest in selling you something trying to give you advice, which you should take with a grain of salt.

There are folks that run larger tires on lesser gears, but it really depends on how you use it. Might as well go 5.13 and be future proof. Here is a chart that came somewhere from the site.

I run 37s, 4.88, manual transmission and it works just fine.
I've never driven auto on 4.56 but my two cents would be it's fine for on road driving. If you rock crawl much, 4.88 would be better for sure. If you plan to go bigger than 37s, definitely regear.

I really wish people would stop reposting this 20+ year old chart. It really doesn't apply to the JL, given it doesn't factor in overdrive. On top of that, it doesn't factor in the true rolling diameter of the tire so the numbers are significantly off. Finally, every engine has a different set of yellow/green/red ranges.

If you have an auto you are going to likely be fine on the 37s and 4.56s. Multiple people I know are running 37s on the auto and stock Rubi 4.10s and have noticed 0 difference in drivability.

Its not going to grenade your rear end if you put 37s on so just put them on and see how you feel with it.

At the end of the day only you can decide if you NEED to re-gear after the bigger tires or not.

depends on how much you want your coolant, oil and transmission fluids flowing at the rate the designers intended for any given load.

Some version of this question is asked about six or seven times per year. It’s been discussed so many times that many folks no longer participate.

You can easily find the last eight or ten threads on the topic using the site’s search engine, but here’s a start:

Another “Do I need to re-gear” thread

Cutting to the chase, you do NOT have to regear to run 37s or even 38s. Many are happy staying with 410s. Others choose to regear, most often to 488 or 513, as I did, but the math of the JL transmission is a game changer. Z&C White makes the most cogent arguments in favor of sticking with 410s, and he wheels his jeeps a lot.

As you read the many threads on this topic you’ll discover that the conversation feels like a debate over which truck brand or ice cream flavor is best.

Where can you get a regear for $2500? When I had my JK done in 2020 it was $3k. My JL in 2023 I think was around $4k, though that might be a little high.

Put the 37s on and drive it for a while, take it offroad. Sounds like you have 4.56s, which means you have have an automatic. So what engine do you have.

I have a 2.0T, 4.56s, and 37s. I haven't had the opportunity to do any true rock crawling yet, but I have had it up in the mountains above CO Springs on a couple trails. Whether on the road or on the trails in the mountains, I've not yet encountered a situation where it felt under powered.

IMO 5.13s would be too low for 37s and the AT. It's a lot of money to just go one step up to 4.88s in gear ratio. I will wait until I get some true rock crawling in before I make my final decision. But, my experience thus far tell's me 4.56s might be good enough for 37s, at least with the 2.0T and AT.

Come down to Texas. My re-gear last November (2024) was $2331.82. Ended up with Revolution gears, but the price was the same. Kevin @ Trendsetters Customs out in Weatherford is one of the best in the business. He had me in and out in about 5 hours. I just took the laptop with me and worked (and watched the install) from the shop.

Sorry for the dumb question, but why does it cost $2,500 to regear a diff? Obviously more involved than one would think.
