I took it to the dealership this morning for other service, and just received a call from my service advisor. He said that the rattling sound was related to the Turbo and that it was normal and that there was nothing else they could do at this time. Do you have any idea if there is something actually wrong of if there’s something I can do to stop the noice? It’s a pretty noticeable rattle (especially when the doors are off). It is intermittent but happens usually every time I drive my Jeep. The rattle sounds like it’s coming from the driver’s side of the engine bay.
Thanks for circling back, Kate. From a customer care perspective, I can't necessarily provide any technical advice as I am not a trained technician. We rely on our dealers in that regard. I know it's inconvenient but are you thinking you'd like to get a second opinion? Send me a direct message as I'd be glad to discuss this further and help however I can.

This is the response I got from my service department. The service adviser told me that it’s just normal turbo noise apparently. He told me to bring it back in if other noises started or if any lights come on. I have a hard time believing that it's completely normal, since it's not happening to all of them (based on others in this thread: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/turbo-rattle.28478/page-2#post-709092). For now, I am just going to continue driving it and monitoring the situation. I just don't want a small issue to become an expensive problem later that I'll have to pay for... but luckily I have a lifetime powertrain warranty that came with the vehicle.

I had the same issue. Rattle/metal sound only when accelerating. I had them replace the exhaust down pipe and the seal/clamp.
Sound gone.

Thanks for showing me these notes, Kate. Keep me updated on whether you head back in. As I mentioned, I can always forward a case to a Case Specialist for further handling.

Has any considered changing the spark plugs to a grade or two cooler and see if this helps. I am sure FCA uses the hottest plugs possible to retain heat in the cylinder for an extremely clean burn to help meet EPA standards. A cooler plug would lower combustion chamber temperature and result in less pre ignition.

Following this thread as my 2018 JL 6 speed manual is having the same pre ignition knock sound mostly between 2nd and 3rd gear. I'd like to see Jeep find a fix and send out a recall because this cannot be good for the motor. And its extremely annoying. I plan on running some higher octane fuel and also checking exhaust heat shields.... fingers crossed

Good Evening Family,

2018 JLUR 6-MT 3.6L - I am hearing a rattling noise under acceleration in 2nd & 3rd gear or while having low RPMs in those gears. It's gotten louder over the past few months and much much more persistent. Has anyone come up with any solutions or pinpointed the issue before I decided to take it to the dealer. Just really don't want anyone else working on my car, especially dealers. Also, is this a transmission or engine issue?

I just got mine back from the dealership. They had it for a month and could hear the noise, but couldn't isolate it. I describe mine like a loose washer on a bolt. I opened a case with Jeep and the next step is for me to continue to drive it to see if it gets worse. They originally suspected the heat sheild but couldn't fix it. Sounds like its coming from under the dash behind the glovebox or radio.

Hi all, just an update. I checked all the heat shields and components under the jeep. Everything was tight and nothing could contact my exhaust. But.....I also filled my tank with 91 octane and so far no more noise. I think they need the higher octane fuel to eliminate the knock. And its annoying enough I'm happy to pay the extra money!

Higher octane seems to consistently work for everyone. I've noticed BP mid-grade works fine too. BP's additive blend is better than most and I suspect they underrate their octane levels.

I've been hearing this sound for a while now, and decided to search our forum. Sure enough, I come across this and other threads. Wow... so it's either "normal", or preignition/knock that FCA needs to revise a tune for. Sounds like better octane gas will solve this? I just filled my tank up with 87. SML. :( I'll try to go 91 or 93 once this is empty.

@JeepCares - you've been ignoring the posts that specifically state or mention going back to FCA and issuing a TSB or recall on all this. Are you going to ignore my statement too? Let me guess, you're going to quote my reply, and say something about "send us a direct message and we'll escalate it for you" type of response? Give me a break.

Hi From0toJ,

Our team monitors the forum constantly and send every trend we notice to the appropriate internal resources for further review. Sending a private message and creating cases is exactly what we need in order to bring awareness to a certain concern. This is why we follow that process. I do apologize for any inconvenience you've experienced with your Wrangler and understand any disappointment as a result. If there is ever a time you're having trouble with your vehicle, we do encourage you to send us a private message with your VIN because it could be the beginning of creating a that service bulletin.

Have a great weekend and let me know if you have any other questions.

Add my Jeep to the list.

I've read this whole thread. Gonna try higher octane. The idea of taking my Jeep to the dealership is extremely unpalatable. It's not just that I don't trust the technicians, but that the general belief is that the engine runs too lean and that FCA needs to fix it.

Spent 50k on my JLUR. It should run without knocking, right @JeepCares?

I completely agree. I wasn't about to let the dealer have it for a week just to tell me it's normal. It's not. Hey Jeep Cares I want to file a case, we paid too much for problems that are unavoidable from a manufacturer. I've got rattles, pops and clunks on a brand new jeep. Yes I know it's a jeep but my 94 YJ feels more solid and sound!
