My poor 2018 jlur with 68,000 trouble free miles caught fire. I was driving home when I smelled it, luckily just one mile away. I stopped in the street and grabbed the hose. After looking it over I drove it around the block and the dash lit up and has a very soft pedal.
I pulled off the drivers side inner liner and the harness from the fire wall to the drivers front wheel sensor and e locker was burned/chewed by RATS.
The insulation on the brake hard lines next to the exhaust manifold was burned as well.
There were 3 codes, U115F, B1BE7, and U0101. I replaced the e locker 15a fuse, replaced the chewed on and burnt harness (only $60 from dealer!), and cleared the codes. All that is left now is the soft pedal. The dealer will flush the system this week, I hope. I believe the insulation burning boiled the brake fluid, there is no visible damage to anything else. Does anyone have a pic of what that insulation on the brake lines looks like? I’m trying to visualize how/why what was there that burned.
as for the rats, I hope they don’t come around again.

Yep sadly after some vehicles heat up and or wires become warm they emit slight aromas like vegetable smells or vanilla based on some manufacturers using soy based wire looms or wire shielding or vegetable based wire sheathing.

this was a huge problem for us at BMW back in early to mid 90’s. They were vegetable based if I remember correctly.

If you have comprehensive coverage with your car insurance, call them and file a claim. Damage caused by rodents is likely covered by the comprehensive part of your insurance (had it happen to a previous vehicle). They should pay for the dealer to verify any damage from the rat has been repaired.

Toyota uses peanut oil—$5+K , main wire loom replaced, front loom repaired on 4R, ground squirrels. Insurance covered with deductible. Gasoline, gunpowder, large rocks to seal holes, and a match eliminated the problem. Then hung two Owl boxes, no further rodent damage. ?
