Almost all car dealer techs are paid flat rate. That means they are paid their hourly rate per job. Sometimes it will favor the tech. Say that they get 12 hrs for an engine remove and replacement, but can perform it in 10 hrs. That allows them to get another job, before the 12 hrs, but still get paid for the 12. But sometimes the book time is difficult to meet and they end up over the time. Not an ideal situation.
Yeah, that’s why I’m hoping a technician who has actually done the repair. Will see my post and say for example they allow four hours to do this, but nobody can do it in less than six and if they make say 100 bucks an hour I will pay the technician 200 bucks, so he’s not getting and working for free With the hopes that he will be grateful and take better care of my car and do the recall correctly

How do you fellas get paid? Are you not paid by the hour (40 hr week with OT if necessary)?
I can see the dealership only charging x hrs for a given job, and maybe wanting mechanics/techs to work faster. I just wonder how that would reduce an individual's paycheck.
We are paid by "flag time" we have a labor guide, one for customer pay out of warranty labor times and the other is warranty labor times, if a job pays a tech 2 hours then you get to hours regardless if you are slow and it takes you 5 hours to complete but if you are fast and efficient and get it completed in 1 hour you still get paid the 2 hours if that makes since.

I'm 100% sure our local techs are hourly. I don't care if the dealer makes more profit off their labor or not. I've seen what they charge customers for bs like cilajet so they'll get theirs somewhere. If you want a better clutch, talk to your dealer. They might do the labor under the recall and put in whatever clutch you want if you pay for the parts.
Hourly pay is pretty unheard of in the dealership world. Every place I know of is "flag time" for techs.

Seems like being paid by the job, versus by the hour, is not necessarily good for the customer, inasmuch as it can motivate rushing.

In an admittedly extreme example, imagine that you are getting a heart transplant, and the surgeon is paid a flat rate.
This is 100% correct as a tech you are expected to produce more hours than there are in the day each day for production. If you are an awesome tech that can work quickly and still do amazing work that is fine but I know a lot of "techs" I would want to air up the tires in my bicycle!!

Can an experienced, well tooled, tech do that recall per flat rate time?
Yes but you need to be working quickly! You are one broken or rusted exhaust bolt away from making time or loosing hours trying to deal with something that has gone wrong.

I wish techs made 100 per hour! The dealership will charge 150+ per hour of labor but the tech will see 20ish % of that $150

We are down to 4.1 hours through 5 hours depending on what year and what sized cluster screen

Can the 19a job be completed in that time frame or does it take longer usually

If you are a competent tech, that has done a few of them already and DON'T get interrupted by your service advisor to pull off of that job to work on a waiter vehicle and everything goes well (ie. no broken or rusted exhaust bolts) you can do it in the allotted time.
Though it is still very frustrating that Mopar lowered the labor time for this recall last month or so. Basically saying yes keep doing the recalls but we are going to pay you less for the same job!

Here in CA not only are dealer techs hourly, they make between $35 and $65/hr. Piece work is must not a thing out here.
Dang I need to move but that cost of living and cali smog and emissions testing would take any extra money you make!

Biannual smog testing is all of $60.... every 2 years. Yes the cost of living is high, but after spending 3 months in AZ on a job, it's not so much higher as to accept shit wages in my experience.

True but housing being a big thing, a million dollar home here in Kansas is getting you a pretty nice place vs. Cali that same million gets you a 2 person tent with a 5 gallon bucket lol
