Cops don’t make the laws, and the last thing we need as a society is selective enforcement of the law. Don’t like the law? Get involved in your local elections, or petition your state representative.

Exactly. Selective enforcement opens the door to all the other factors a cop might consider when choosing which drivers to pull over and cite and which leave alone or give a warning to. Not all those other factors end up being equitable.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are pretty far apart, almost 5 hours. OP lists as being from Pittsburgh, not Philadelphia.

I’m a jeeper, and a cop. I don’t create laws. I only enforce them. Vehicle code violations were all created with public safety in mind.

Having my best friend killed in a collision at 18 years old has given me a huge focus on public safety in regards to vehicles. His friend crossed over a double yellow to pass and hit an off duty police officer head on killing my friend and the police officer who was a husband and father of an infant. A huge loss of life and it could have been avoided.

I will never let a dangerous driver off the hook. Sometimes violations are made unintentionally and it’s my duty to remedy that issue and make the roadway a safer place for them and other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Sometimes a little kind and professional education is enough to change their behavior. Sometimes a written citation is needed. Discretion needs to be used appropriately.

Now with that being said, the “hard ass” officer that was such a hard ass he didn’t cite you btw, may have just been to a horrific collision where someone without doors suffered major injuries or worse. Who knows?

The one thing we do know now is that you committed a violation and it sounds like an officer probably educated you and felt that was enough. Be happy he or she used their discretion and quit complaining about laws. You didn’t write them and neither did the police officer that stopped you.

Statistics overwhelmingly support the fact that if an American is going to die early, it’s most likely going to be in an automobile.

I don't see a dime of the fines imposed from my citations and if I review the fines, it’s a minimal amount going to my agency. The fine is a reason for someone to change their behavior.


Maybe, just maybe, you will realize that he or she may have had your safety in mind when they stopped you and educated you.

And trust me, regardless of the fine amount, the majority of the cops that actually enforce some of these laws are the ones who work for small municipalities that are trying to generate more revenue. That’s a big reason why the legislature keeps shooting down laws that allow municipal cops to use radar for speed enforcement.

Individual choice or not, you seem to forget that we all live in places with laws. Perhaps you should confine yourself to private property to excuse yourself from the majority of vehicle code violations.

Well, I got pulled over for no doors in Pennsylvania by a local cop in my neighborhood. Not pleased at all. Was told it is illegal in Pennsylvania and next time it will be points and a hefty fine. He gave me the option of going to get my doors back on or the ticket. The cop was hard assed and looked for every infraction. Needless to say, I am afraid my days of riding doorless are one until we move. Doubt I’ll still own the Jeep by then.

Makes me smile. Reminds me of when me and my old lady were pulled over for no pants.

OR, the cop can use his discretion and choose not to enforce ignorant laws. It happens all the time. There’s plenty of actual crime out there that cops can focus on, instead of just revenue generation.

Yes, and no. Attitude has a lot to do with Police Digression. Also, there are very few Police Officers who go out there and try to enforce every miniscule violation they see. If a warning is given, then be thankful, and see about getting the issue corrected.
If some idiot is pulled over, by me, for a clear violation, that I intended to just give a verbal warning for, and he/she says I should be fighting real crime, instead of picking on them, for a nothing violation, they get the entire ticket. Respect, and good attitude will get you out of a ticket faster than a piss poor attitude, and arguing, every time.
BTW, I rarely ever write citations, but when I do, they are well deserved.

I live in NEPA, and I hate this state. Most F'd up state I've lived in. I see ATVs running down the street all the time. Motorcyclists with no helmets. Getting a ticket for no doors on the Wrangler is just stupid.

What about the person that has to scoop your brains off the highway? And what about your parents? Significant other? Kids? Friends? Tax payers that have to pay for the ambulance, fire truck, and police that show up, and the clean up of the incident? There is no such thing as "it's my life". Its not just yours, it impacts all if us.

If you cant do the time, don't do the crime. I always thought that was a funny saying. I hear a bunch of whiners who apparently dont like police, or just dont like them enforcing the laws they like to violate. If you whiners dont like the laws, try to get them changed, dont break the laws, or roll the dice and break it. But be men about it, and stop whining. It was probably your attitudes that got you tickets. If you were pulled over, for a violation you committed, and werent issued a citation, then stop being a titty baby and be grateful. Man up guys.
