just get it. stop being cheap or lazy and get it lol. ive heard people say they dont want to spend the extra $50 or whatever or they say, meh, i have Plus. STOP what you're doing, pick up the phone, call AAA, and upgrade, before you forget. if you have another service or your insurance will tow you, awesome. hopefully they will tow you 200 miles for free like Premier will.

@SadRobot just went through an ordeal where her jeep broke down in BFE. AAA towed it to the local mechanic in Radiator Springs. he couldnt fix it, surprise. she was stuck. no rental options etc... she called AAA, they said $2k to tow it 165 miles back to her house. Mater offered to tow it for her for $1k. she has basic AAA which gives you 9-12 miles or something like that. after that, the clock starts running. some tow yards will charged $10-13 a mile! do the math.

with AAA Premier, you get one 200 mile tow per year. and three additional 100 mile tows. ive been going to Big Bear and San Diego quite a bit lately, both of which are just over 100 miles from my house. let alone some other trails or even Vegas or san francisco. ive used the 200 mile tow a couple times in the past. as a car guy with highly modified vehicles, sht happens. AAA Plus only gives you a 100 mile tow.

i was on the phone with my father who lives out in BFE and drives all over. he said he had it but cancelled it because he never used it (he's cheap) and its a waste of money blah blah blah. i told him how much sadrobot was looking at and he was in shock. he thought it would be a couple of hundred bucks like it was back in the early 80s lol. (he still thinks Germany is the same as it was back in the 70s when he was stationed there lmao).

do yourself and God forbid any passengers a huge favor and upgrade to Premier before its too late. and yes, i told sadrobot to call and upgrade over the phone but they told her there is a 7 day waiting period before it kicks in. they know.... lol.

and no, i dont work for AAA lol. i hear its a horrible place to work. ive had more than a couple friends/family who have broken down a ways from home and only have the basic service and i always hear excuses why.

What’s the issue with Jen’s Jeep? Did she find a way to get it back home without paying a kidney for a tow? I wish I could drive, I’d bring the truck and tow it ☹

N3 fuse. She was able to get it going using N4 and got it home.

New fuse array should be on order soon and hopefully is in before next week for us to tackle Gold Mountain.

Awesome, glad she was able to get it going again! I carry a spare specifically for that reason.

I do recommend you follow Pig-pen's advice. That said, I have Premier, and it's not a silver bullet, or as good as it should be.

You see, AAA still has to contract with local tow companies. And they're chronically under-staffed, and therefore can be reluctant (to say the least) to send their drivers out on a long tow.

Here's my tale of woe:

Last summer I had a car brick up on me here in South Lake Tahoe. Manufacturer recommended to tow it to a dealer in Reno. "Only" 60 miles and well within the AAA policy. "We'll arrange something within 3 hours" they say. At the end of three hours, they said they were unable to find a contracted driver. But I could call again tomorrow.

Next day, I tried again, bright and early. After three hours, nope, still couldn't get a driver. If I could arrange a local company to tow, they said, I could submit the invoice and they'd reimburse.

I ended up jury rigging a band-aid to get the vehicle to start (basically a very unconventional jump-start) and then *drove* the thing to the dealer, being careful never to turn it off before I arrived.

After the fact, I found out about a local non-AAA tow outfit that specializes in longer tow type cash jobs. So I probably coulda called them to do the job, paid cash, and gotten reimbursed later.

So, lessons learned? AAA is a worthwhile protective measure, but not a magic bullet to make problems go away.
  • AAA can sometimes take a real long time to send someone (in my experience, more often than not)
  • Having AAA coverage doesn't guarantee you a driver.
So, consider AAA a good supplement, but still always be prepared to practice basic self reliance.

And here's a good short youtube on the fuse array. I love vids that are only a few minutes of content, and aren't "puffed up" to last 10 or 15 or 20 minutes, stringing you along to reveal a tiny piece of valuable information at the end.

I did end up getting home this morning at 230AM. Between towing to a local shop, hotel room, train tickets, taxi/uber service, gas reimbursement for friend who got me from the train station, battery replacement, diagnostic fee from the shop, new batteries and paying someone to drive from LA back to the Jeep with a tow rig I'm out about $1500.

In the end the mechanic had no idea what was wrong and had no interest in fixing it and just wanted me out of there. I paid a friend of a friend to drive me 3 hours with their truck and towing equipment from LA to Avenal. When we got to the Jeep I checked the fuses and was able to get it running again and we caravaned it back home (in case it broke down again for some reason).

I upgraded to AAA Premiere in case it happens again someday.

edit: Basic AAA only covers 5 miles of towing. Beyond that it's up to the tow services discretion. The only tow company that provided service where I broke down was $15/mile

I have tow coverage with State Farm, cost like $6 per year per vehicle. I can contact them and they will cover a tow to the nearest repair shop or I can contract my own and get reimbursed. Only used 2X so far. 1 winter my daughter slid her Eclipse off the road on ice and had it yanked out. The other time our Audi went dead and I had it flat bedded home. Both times were covered no questions. I am guessing if I was out away from home I could use it the same way to get a car towed to a shop of my choice rather than the nearest and probably POS shop around

Wow. That’s insanity!! Is yours still under warranty? I believe Jeep will reimburse some of that. Also, I don’t know if it would’ve been applicable in that scenario but isn’t there some Facebook group called SoCal Off-road rescue or something like that? I believe it’s a conglomerate of folks who will do rescues and it’s usually free?

Sorry, I’m pretty doped up here so I’m not firing on all cylinders.

Nah I'm way out of warranty. I don't have Facebook so not sure about that group. That's cool of them to do that though.

I'm member of a couple off road volunteer recovery groups.

The service is in the name - "off road." They won't help someone who's on the pavement who has (presumably) other options.
