I bought a 3 year old JLU. Three weeks after getting it home the drivers side door handle stopped recognizing me grabbing the handle.

Thankfully replacing the two pieces of the exterior door handle (Mopar parts from Quadratec), it is working like brand new.

I was comfortable ordering $250 is worth of parts because when I switched the handles from drivers side to passenger side (and vise versa) the problem moved to the passenger door.

When I had that issue it was a broken wire in the wire harness due to the constant bending from opening and closing the door. I actually found multiple wires broken or damaged when I opened up the cloth sleeve over the harness. Are all the switches on your door illuminated when your lights are on? That’s what alerted me to look at the wire harness.

looks like its my harness too, i replace the handle and the passive entry still doesnt work. how big of a pain in the ass was it to replace the harness ?

I actually repaired all the wires back together with wire connector sleeves. I then put them all in a plastic wire sleeve. ( like you would use for the wires on a tv etc…) I was thinking that would help keep it from not happening again.
I then stitched back up the cloth sleeve. ( I had to cut the seam open to get to the broken wires.) It was a pain in the ass but it’s all still working correctly. May be easier to just replace the harness though.🤷‍♂️ good luck

i found another thread that had a picture showing multiple broken wires at the bend point so i just ordered another harness. i'll probably patch mine too, then replace the harness in the spring since winter seems to have settled in pretty quick this year.

thanks for your reply, much appreciated and happy holidays.

I have been having issues for few months with my power mirrors not working, then all of a sudden the driver door lock/unlock button and proximity stopped working. Passenger and Tailgate were fine and would lock/unlock all doors. I take the doors off frequently and i checked the pins many times and they were all fine. I tried to pull on the wires individually and they all seemed tight. I checked fuses, connectors in the passenger footwell and almost went to the dealer.

Last weekend, I finally cut the wire cover and i had 8 broken or about to break wires. I soldered the wires and put heat shrink around my repairs, put on a new wire cover and good as new. I guess after 6 years and 100k miles that's what happens in a Wrangler... Never had an issue in any other vehicle including my Pontiac with 270k. Hope this helps someone, I spent hours googling and going nuts.

Where'd ya get the new wire cover ?

This break was where the wires bend where the door opens and closes right ?

For a more permanent solution would it be better the splice in like 3" of silicone wire for better repeated flexibility at the bend point ?

Yup that’s exactly what I found and repaired about the same way. It’s been over a year for me with no new issues.

I got the cover on Amazon. It has a zipper so you don't have to cut it again. Its slightly thinner than factory. The only issue is the hook that goes to the door to the hook in the footwell is too short so the door barely opens. I'm ok with the footwell hook not attached.
Silicone wire might be a good upgrade, but I'm ok with my fix and see how long it lasts.

This is extremely common on ford and Chevy pickups and SUV’s as well. Not so rare at all really.

Oh, anyone have a link for the wire harness or the doorhandle? I need to check this out on my jeep as well. After I put my doors back on, for the first time, the driver side proximity unlock stopped working. The other buttons, like for the mirror and all that are fine.

I have a door handle you can check with before you buy a new one, it takes 4 minutes to swap it with another one and it would save you from buying one you don't need. (Like I did). I'm probably just splicing the wire back together until warmer weather then replacing the harness next summer.... It seems like just a couple weeks ago it was still hot here

I got spoiled and had more doors off for almost 6 months here in NC, looks like those pins corrode really easily. My pin 15 snapped off. Advice for other folks, maybe wrap the male head or something, wasn't expecting the humidity to destroy mine.
