I have the APEX boost kit running 2,000 psi. Wheeling in moab my power steering HOT warning has come on several times. I've read here someone wired a 12v fan to the pump to help with this issue. I'm assuming it's wired to an aux switch. Does anyone have any guidance on how to do this and also part suggestions?

I also have the Apex kit running 2000 psi and I have the cooler. Did you install a cooler as well?

Another thing I did was to use the best high temperature electric power steering fluid (EPS) I could find. It turned out to be Amsoil EPS, which exceeded other fluids by a wide margin, both in terms of better viscosity retention at high temps and flash point.

To purge the old fluid, I disconnected both lines and hung them lower than the steering box to drain into a bucket, I then moved the steering quickly from lock to lock with the front wheels off the ground by grabbing a front tire and forcing it from stop to stop. This purged the steering box. For the pump, I just drained it and the small reservoir.

I would start with the cooler and see if that helps, assuming you do not have one.

Feels like this is more common on 392's if that helps your search.

On the other Jeep board (re: 392), a user called ebycreek posted something. I'm being cryptic because I'm not sure if I'm bending rules posting a direct link.

Power Steering HOT Warning? would be something to search for.

I have gotten the warning once on a hot day in Canyonlands but I haven't added a fan...yet.

This might be a little bit of a long-shot, but you can try checking and cleaning the ground location for the power steering pump. I believe it's in the group of grounds behind the right headlight.

Poor grounds = high resistance = voltage rise = heat.

Does anyone have a link to a build/manufacturer for the fan and/or pictures showing the install, where they mounted and wired it, and all that jazz?

Install the RPM Extreme JL fan controller.
Not only will it keep your coolant and engine oil 25 degrees cooler you will have more air pulling heat from the steering oil cooler at lower temps because your rad. fan will start moving air at 195 degrees.
You can also order the fan controller with the option to turn the rad. fan on at any time.
