Its possibly ill be moving up to Richmond, sometime soon.

Is there any local 4x4 trails for jeeps? I looked online and said the closest OHV was 5 hours away.
Is this place going to depress me in terms of offroading and isolate camping?

Here in socal, I can pretty much camp in the middle of nowhere with no one around for dozens of miles.

I'm not overly familiar with the Bay Area but doing a quick google map look - I think you'll be hard pressed to find a place nearby for isolated camping. Off-roading I'm not so sure of. There is an OHV park closer to Sacramento, but not sure if that's what you're looking for.

There are a couple of easy trails further north of Richmond around Clearlake (~2 hour drive away)

Ugh this is gonna be hell.
Now, i live 2 hours from hundreds of trails, many badge of honor trails. Tons of BLM and yellow post camping.

There are clubs and places you can go, but it takes a bit of research. Hollister Hills seems to be the go-to playground for NorCal, but there's others. Yosemite isn't too far. Clavey River and Feather River Canyon as well. There's some OHV and trails around Eagle Lake. Stanislaus Forest has several areas. I would recommend joining a local club or group. There's one that meets at the San Jose 4WP store fairly often. I believe they are called South Bay Overland Bound and they often do monthly two or three day camping trips.

I’m in the east bay, San Leandro. No there’s not much local. There is a lot towards Tahoe and in the Sierras but 3+ hours away. Clubs in the sierras are mostly hardcore rock crawling. I’ve done the Rubicon on 35s and it’s a slog so I’m t quite in that league.

There’s Carnegie and Hollister Hills to just mess around.

What types of trails you looking for?

I like em all, except the ones that take 3 hours to move 100 feet with 3 spotters yelling 4 different directions. Im told I wont be a fan of rubicon haha! Im on 38s though. My favorite would be steep mountain terrain and a bit of speedy sand runs, basically socal type stuff. Just not a big fan of really slow crawling. Steep ruts are a lot of fun.

You might find Compton and maybe Willowbrook or Boyle Heights safer to live in rather than Richmond. Point Richmond may be nice, but it is still adjacent to Richmond and you still have to travel through Richmond to get to anywhere from Pt. Richmond and there appears that there are are a lot of incidents of sexual assaults against women.

It will take at least a day of travel just to and from a trail from there.

I agree on the slow crawling and waiting for others. At my age, I just want to keep moving and see the beauty of the trails and mountains. I don't want to sit there and wait on anyone. I guess it is my nature these days to stay on the move. I don't mind rock gardens, just not a steady diet of them.

I am in the East Bay and as everyone said, off-roading is a ways away.
Carnegie (small playground) east of Livermore is ~1.5 hr from Richmond and Prairie City (larger playground) east of Sacramento is ~1 hr away from Richmond. Other than that, you need to head to the Sierra foothills ~2-3 hrs for the closest trails, but there are plenty once you can get to the mountains.
When look around at all the beautiful Bay area hills I wonder why there is nowhere to off-road locally.

There are a lot of fire trails through the mountains that I use to run on dirt bikes. I never saw Jeeps on them but I think they are allowed.

Last year we stayed at Loon Lake near Rubicon and we found several fire road/trails all around that area we were able to take. Mostly easier roads, but some super great views.

a couple of the guys gave you good info; you can probably tell which ones (because they actually live in the area).

i would add that while there is nothing to compare to what's adjacent to some of SoCal, NorCal has the Sierra, and lots of mountain trails a couple/few hours north or east that are not like anything found in SoCal. i loved the Dez and Baja when i lived down there, but it's a good slog to get to from here.

curious what would bring anyone to Richmond these days, but feel free to look me up if/when you get here.

Is Frank Raines still open? I used to wheel there a couple decades ago.

I suddenly feel old.
