I’m pretty sure it’s safe to assume one will only fit the jk and the other will only fit the jl. You can probably find that out on bestop.com

Obviously! lol! But I’m asking what the differences are just looking at them. It takes a lot to install them on the car. I want to know the difference before that. Asking for a friend. They are trying to buy one second hand and want to make sure when the person says it is JL that it is in fact JL.

Have the seller show the Jeep it came from.
That is not a possibility that’s why I am asking the differences between the two. Whether it is the parts or type of bracket. Looks like nobody can give the answer I’m looking for here. šŸ˜”

See if the seller can provide a model number or serial number or some other kind of identifying model specific number, then head to Google and look up the manufacturer specs for it or call them and ask.

Find pictures on the internet of the door surrounds and see how they compare to the used ones.
The door surrounds will be the most obvious differance at a glance.

Option #1. Go look at the best top being sold. You're looking for part number stickers. Every part has a part number sticker. If for some reason they're not on the parts. Look closer at the injection mold for any part number included in the injection process. If you get a valid part number, go to Besttop and look up the part number to see what Jeep it fits. If you can't get any part numbers, don't buy it.

Option #2, if you can't go to look for yourself. Ask the seller to send you any pics of the part number stickers. Or see if there are any part numbers on the actual part. If you get a part number, go to the best top site and look it up to see what Jeep it fits. No part number, don't buy it.

Option #3. Just go buy a new soft top and be done with it.

And here you thought nobody could answer your question.

I second option 3. No mess, no fuss and you know it’ll fit

I believe the entire frame /brackets/bows assembly is competely different

they made it more "self" assisted, the jl is much easier to put up and down by yourself, the jk used to be a little more involved having to go from one side to the other more than once to "organize/fold" the fabric but the jl folds the fabric by itself

I would suggest that you watch both of these videos of a soft top being installed on a JL and a JK.

While the soft top your friend is considering buying may not be one of the ones featured in these videos, by watching these you will develop an appreciation of the internal difference in each vehicle and its connection points to the soft top.

For example, the dual rear corner attachment points for each vehicle are different.

Bestop seemed to start using "C" channel connection hardware for its soft tops members in the JL, where zippers were more a JK thing but again, I can't speak to the vendor who made the soft top that you're friend is looking to buy.

Slant backs are ugly. Buy a used MOPAR soft top and run it safari style.

If you look on FB marketplace, you’ll notice the JL windows snap in and the JK windows zipper in.

So you’re entering into a transaction where the seller has no idea what they’re selling? Make sure they take Zelle. I hear it’s legit. Send the money before you go as that will speed up the transaction time.
