I just got an email from Jeep Wave advertising a deal on the onX Offroad app. Has anyone used it?

The deal being offered to Jeep owners is either a 6 month free trial, or begin a yearly membership now at half price.

Is it worth it? How's the quality and amount of content of offroad trails?

Its not bad, it has plenty of tracks already in the app especially if you live somewhere out west. However I have found Gaia to be just as good if not better at a fraction of the cost for the top membership. If you plan on buying a bunch of parts from onx partners you may save the extra but overall not really worth it. They both offer CarPlay apps and public land layers (at the top subscription for Onx) as well as the ability to port in whatever you want into them trail/track wise.

Think of the 2 like IOS and Android. While onx (and ios) are more polished and easy to use the other has much more functionality if you take the time to learn it.

Interesting, I'm curious about this too. Seeing as it's just a phone app, and not a native uConnect app, I'm curious what the benefit is of running this on your screen via CarPlay/AndroidAuto, versus running something free like Gaia GPS.

For me its being able to run it right on the radio rather than having to carry an ipad or something. Which can also be done with Gaia now so no reason to use onx for me

Once I figured out how to download and use off line, I found ONX to be useful. That said I haven’t tried Gaia, and I do know folk’s really like it as well.

I tried Gaia GPS and found it too complicated to display what I wanted, plus at the time it didn't work with Android Auto. I switched to OnX OffRoad and like the simplicity of the display and that it (sometimes) works with Android Auto. However, the Android Auto display functionality is glitchy, sometimes locking up or unable to find it's present position (while the app on my phone is working fine). Also, the Android Auto display on the Jeep screen can't change to North up (my favorite veiw when on the trails).
After my current OnX OffRoad subscription expires, I'll try something different that works with Android Auto until I find something that works well on my Jeep's screen. I prefer Avenza Maps for orientation, but it doesn't work with Android Auto.

OnX isn’t perfect, but it seems to work well enough for me. If you skip the Elite level membership it was only $20 for the year in Black Friday. I feel like I got my $20 worth, especially when I was down in Southern Utah with no cell signal.

Imo OnX is the worst of the options available. But none do everything.

I have a load.

Ideally I'd just like a huge data store of gpx/kml files and a good gpx app.

I use GPX Viewer, BFG Ontrail, Trails Offroad, All Trails and OnX

Sites like JeepTheUSA were great. Just download the gpx and off you go.

Gaia GPS and TrailsOffroad (if you don't know your local trails and their difficulty)
Gaia cannot be beat for the layers, route planning, anything you can think of.

I'll add that I have had a free trial of OnX, and I have friends who use it, but it was always clunky, and not nearly as useful as Trailsoffroad and especially Gaia (there is some learning curve with layers, etc. but once you dive in, it's amazing)

Honestly, I prefer using Gaia GPS for navigating and Trails Offroad for finding trails (and syncing the trail route over to Gaia GPS).

I tried the 6months trail of OnX and just couldnt get use to the way the map is displayed.
My exact thoughts. I scout with Trailsoffroad, and then download them to Gaia for the full route planning.

I read that TO is going to be pre-installed on the 2024 infotainment...I'm curious how that works since TO doesn't have every single road and trail like Gaia does.

So Gaia is on the Unconnect screen? Via android auto? Or is there a way to get it as an included Unconnect feature?

I use Gaia. Wonky AF by itself let alone getting it to display on the dash.

However, it has saved me from my dyslexia getting lost on trails even while looking at paper maps.
