What I thought might be a valve cover gasket leak ended up being the factory oil separator leaking. The part number being replaced is 4893609-AD. At just over 61K miles this is no longer covered either by the OEM or my extended warranty. This roughly $50 part is gonna cost me about 1300 in labor at the dealer. Now as much as I understand labor rates and I trust it will get fixed correctly it still was a bit of price shock.

Anyone else had this part fail?

Why don't you get it fixed at a regular mechanic shop?

The shops I trust still charge about $100 an hour and I'm sure the book rate is about 10-12 hours to actually get to the separator. Also, my other trusted shop diagnosed the leak as the valve cover which was incorrect. However, if it had been my valve cover THAT would have been covered under my extended warranty. That is why it is at the dealership. There is no point now in taking it to another shop.

Why is it not covered by the extended warranty and was this a Mopar extended warranty or a non-OEM warranty?

non OEM extended "warranty forever" which covers a lot of expensive components but not this.

Thanks for clarifying. Our Grand Cherokee L has one of these warranty forever warranties and given that it was "free" (or should I say there was no line item for it on the invoice) and knowing that dealers are never going to stick their necks out very far, I suspect it was not worth the paper it was not written on...

Dealers in my area charge $175+ per hour plus all other stuff they add to the final bill.... complete rip off.

Good luck with the repair. Hopefully it will as good as new.

thanks, good news is that repairs and OEM parts from the dealer are covered for a couple of years. So cry/pay once I hope.

It seems odd that the oil separator is not covered under an extended warranty. I would read the fine print of the warranty very carefully.

Mine had the oil separator leak at around 50k miles. Mine was covered under the base warranty, but the service advisor told me it would also be covered under my MOPAR extended warranty. It took them all day to do it, so you're probably close with your labor estimate. It's on the back side of the block, close to the passenger side. Sounded like there's quite a bit of things to remove to get to it.

When I got mine back from the dealer I had some residual oil dripping for several days, even after I power washed the underside. I think the leaking oil gets trapped in the bell housing and takes a bit to work it's way out.

Very kind of you to Google that for me :)

Reason I asked is that I did not know the JL was equiped with OEM Air Oil Separator. I know catch cans are a topic on the 4Runner forum but without Googling (hehe) do not recall if people are also installing catch cans on the JL.

Anyway, good info here.
People are installing catch cans on JLs.

Have a great day.

JL’s aren’t equipped with catch cans. The oil separator being discussed is for the turbo of the 2.0 engine.
