Morning all, I’m curious about the noises our 2.0s make during a cold start.

Sometimes it’ll sound like a diesel knock and tick at idle and light load until I get some load accelerating and over 30psi of oil pressure.

I just wanna know if I should worry about longevity and these noises during cold starts

How many miles on your oil? I have noticed that around 5000 miles the timing chain gets a little louder at cold idle.

You should hear my 2016 Mini Cooper Countryman with the 1.6 Turbo in it. In cold weather it sounds like someone is tap dancing on the hood until warm.

That's probably the direct injection. It kind of sound like a diesel ticking, it gets better when its warm, but it's still there.
would the sound change with rpm also? All this modern engine stuff is still getting to me

1200 miles since taking it off the lot with 45 miles, I'm going to check if it's overfilled tomorrow now that I read about dealerships putting in 5.5qts

man I tell ya it's a sketchy thing to hear in the morning since it's not always that it sounds like what I'm hearing sometimes.

Yes, it could. My ‘15 Challenger’s injectors made the clicking noise when cold and the frequency increased as the rpm rose, although I haven’t heard it on the 2.0.

Mine is quiet but that’s with an ambient air temp of around 85.

Our 2.0L motors sound more like a piece of machinery than an automobile... but they run well and I’m happy

I love hearing my Jeep drive away if my family takes it out, doesn't sound like a car since you get quite a bit of turbo whine. On cold starts hearing injector ticking until warm is normal. My '86 928 with its 5L V8 has loud injectors so you hear them happily firing away until the whole engine reaches operating temp.

Unless you hear grinding, rattling like something is loose or knocking/slapping you shouldn't worry. Most cars are rather quiet so anything forced induction or higher performance may throw you off as "not normal". Troubling sounds often come with some type of performance or handling issue sooner rather than later.

How about this noise? My ticking/knocking sound is all the time. I've put 5k miles on it in almost two months and it started around 3500 miles. This sound speeds up with increased rpm pressure. It's driving me nuts because I don't know if it's normal or not. This video was taken after a 900 mile trip.

It's the 2.0l with only premium fuel and premium oil/filter.

It all sounds normal to me, have a 2.0 in my sport with about 7500 on it. I always let it warm up past the high idle when I start it and just take it a bit easy for the first few miles when driving for the engine to get up to temp. So far I love it, last winter it got down to about -50 with the wind here for about a week, so if it runs good this winter then I will be super pleased.

I am glad to know it’s a normal sound. The video was after I drove 900 miles. It’s always the same volume and tone. I don’t actually notice it at cold start up. I will wait for that opportunity, however, I live in Florida and it’s never cold lol jk.

Thank you for your feedback

No problem, if it’s really bothering you, which I completely understand, it doesn’t hurt to have your dealership look at it under warranty either. The 2.0 has a very different sound to it do to being a direct injection 4cyl.
Another thing is to check fluids normally and as long as you aren’t experiencing power loss or a major change in sound,I wouldn’t be concerned at all.

So, after watching several videos on YouTube. Reading Google threads, backdating to 2007; I've concluded these are all normal sounds. I grew up with 6-12 cylinder vehicles and so, these noises are new to me.

Thanks again.

The noises this motor makes is kind of alarming at first, coming from a 3.7 in a nitro the small knocks, clicks etc are new noises to me
