So if you live in North Texas, you know that there's a lot of unsavory people who just want your money.

It always irks me when I'm chilling at the gas station or at the grocery store waiting for the wife to come out with a few items, and someone comes knocking on my window with a sob story just asking for a couple dollars so they can get a meal or a gallon of gas to get home. I can't stand that sort of thing. I'm just not sympathetic to that cause. I work hard for my money, and the things I enjoy, and the things I have, and I'm not typically willing to give away money to strangers.

So... HERE'S THE FIX!!

We've a No Soliciting sign on the front porch, secured at eye level and immediately adjacent to the door's brick molding. IOW, it's something only a blind man could miss.

Well, as the archived video footage from our Ring doorbell camera has made plain, there's no small number of sight-impaired SOBs who apparently can't read, either. They press the doorbell button, knock and/or sometimes even jiggle the storm door handle. That last one spooked my wife so much that I now keep a Householder's Friend stashed on our side of the wall, just in case.

As for solicitations while I'm out and about, I have on occasion given a few ducats to the plainly down-on-their-luck folks who ask nicely. Even then, I profile them ruthlessly before I give anything over. If I sense even the slightest hint of aggression, they get nothing. In that case, the hand that's in my pocket might be reaching for something other than currency.

Such is the world we live in.

We used to get a fair number of door-to-door folks in our old neighborhood. I did that a bit in college - it's a tough gig, so I at least try to be polite. However, I've taught my daughters that if you're not expecting someone, then just ignore whoever comes to the door and they'll eventually go away.

On the few instances I get caught working outside or whatever, I've learned that if you tell them you're renting the home, that seems to be a quick universal "this is never going to be a productive conversation" and they take off pretty quickly. Works for nearly everyone other than religious folks, but we don't get much of that really.

There's a guy at a gas station I work at occasionally on Wednesdays. He doesn't work at the gas station, he begs for money from people outside. We call him Justin Bieber on Ice, because he looks like Justin Bieber on Ice. ?

It's kind of sad, he's only 19 and he's a meth head, but at the same time too I'm not about to give him money so he can go get high!

Two weeks ago some super nice guy give him a $20 bill, you should have seen his eyes light up! He told the guy "God bless you!" And then left presumably to go get high! Though who knows maybe he was going to get sandwiches for him and his friends! ? ? ?

We once had this roofing guy going door to door in my neighborhood. Wife saw him coming and tried calling me in from the other room to deal with him. I told her just to ignore him if he comes up to the door and he would go away. Well, he knocked repeatedly, and when my wife didn’t get up off the couch to answer, he started tapping on the front window next to the door and tried to get up close to the window, and started peering in at her. She freaked. I came running into the room like a bat outta hell yelling and cursing, flung the door open, and gave him the look of death. He slowly slinked away back to the curb, and then took off running, presumably back to his car. Serves him right, peeper! ?
