Hello all. I've been poking around the web for a while looking at new Wranglers. This will be an extra vehicle. What we know we want... Unlimited High Altitude with SOT. Jeep will not go off road and will be used around town and on the occasional highway trip. Ive been going round and round with possibly getting the V6, 4t, diesel and 4xe. The Jeep will not have a permanent spot in the garage. Which of course creates an issue for charging a 4xe. Ive been reading the fuel efficiency in hybrid mode is actually worse than a regular 4T due to the added weight. I also know the 4xe is more powerful than all but the v8 which sounds good. There is strong possibility we will have this Jeep for 5+ years. I am also concerned on the complexity of the 4xe drivline long term.
Any input is welcome!!
I’d get the 4XE and figure out a way to keep it charged. Any exterior wall plug will do. Sounds like your driving habits are perfect for the increased efficiency of the 4XE as long as you solve the plug at home.

4XE does have that power, EV mode is really nice (you’ll start getting annoyed when the gas engine kicks in and that’s motivation to keep it charged), plus incentives make it a decent value vs a comparably equipped model with a traditional engine.

Yeah, there are some early gremlins out there, but this is a Jeep. You run that risk hybrid or not.

Why are you all installing lvl2 chargers? The battery pack isn't that big, you leave it plugged in overnight and it'll be charged by the morning.
Charged in ~2 hours means multiple EV trips per day. There are incentives for level 2 plugs in a lot of states. Plug-in vehicles will be more and more of a reality, likely with bigger batteries than this one. Might as well take that plunge and add the convenience.

Correct, but I think he is saying that there isn't a way of saving the battery for the trail. E-save on 'battery save' alone should mostly do that.
Yep, though maybe he just tried it briefly and saw the batter percentage going down from 100%. eSave will keep your battery at ~95% so there will be some initial drain.

good to know what the dealer didn't explain to me. at least there's a solution to charge on the way to keep battery up.

Yea. Or you can charge at home and then select E Save when heading out. It will use about 5-6% of battery to create a buffer and save the rest until you hit the trail.

So far, almost all my off road time has been with engine off. Pretty cool. :)

Poke around here and you'll learn a bit! The dealer didn't know shit about the 4xe when I bought mine either.

If you don't plan on going offroad, why the Wrangler? Just for the convertible top?
I realize on this site most owners seem to be off roaders. Here in sunny and flat FL, 90% of the thousands of Wranglers on the road are used for cruising. In our case it’s the only four door with the open air experience that is the largest draw.

Nothing wrong with that. That’s probably the case with most Wrangler owners.

Nothing wrong with cruising if it brings a smile to your face.

IMO - Jeeping on a Florida beach with the top down is just as enjoyable as doing it in the mountains.

I love my 4xe and what people don't say enough is that it's fun to drive on electric. Instant torque mixed with silence-- it's perfect. And you can just put a level two charger outside, just get a weatherproof option. We'll never go back to a gas only car. This is just too easy.

This series is fantastic for learning about the 4xe, especially parts 3 and onwards. It is one of the chief 4xe product engineers answering user questions, so from the horses mouth so to speak. Here is the 5th and final...

Looking to custom order my first jeep 4Xe and there is no deposit required from the dealer. They just want name and address. Do you think I can cancel buying the order if I find another one readily available while waiting? Trying to see what the catch is.

As long as you don’t sign a contract, you should be good.

They obviously don't care if you don't follow through, hence no deposit required. The reason? Jeep is only building 4xe's for customers ('sold order') not dealer orders. They will use you to get a 4xe on their lot. Without a deposit, they can hope you just walk away, or even sell to another and say it was a mistake. They won't even care that your name is on the window sticker, it will still sell for more than you agreed. They might piss off Jeep, and might even lose their allocation for 2022 if they get caught screwing around. But if you voluntarily walk away, they are in the clear.

OK. Got it. So it’s no-risk for me too then. They said the order may take 14-16 weeks so just looking at my options if something similar that is available pops out in another dealer’s lot. Thanks. I think I will go ahead with the order.
