Hey Guys.. this is my first post. I'm working a deal on 4 door Willys with the Xtreme Recon 35–Inch Tire Package I found on a dealer lot, and fell in love with. Now the thing is, I dont need a new jeep AT ALL... but really who does.. I'm trying to justify the cost in my head as a investment. They are at 52 and change. I research the package, and it seams like most guys say its worth the money if you are going to use it.. other wise just add tires and wheels later.. My questions is if the day comes and I sell it, is there a good return on the extra purchase cost?? Thanks Scott..

Is 52 and change the MSRP?

I would never recommend buying any vehicle short of super rare supercars as an investment. If you are looking to buy something with intent of selling it later and want to lose as little as possible a Jeep is always a good way to go. As far as the one you are looking at, I would be willing to bet it will hold it's value as well as any other Jeep if not a lit bit better. Just be warned, you might not want to sell it once you have it for a while. I wouldn't sell my Jeep even if I could get more than I paid for it.

You will never justify the Jeep as an investment. Don't delude yourself. The question you need to ask is if it's worth the cost. Depending on where you want to end up and how much sweat equity you want to put in it, it may or may not be worth it. That's for you to decide. Just don't fool yourself with the "I" word. That's delusion.

It will depreciate far less than almost any other vehicle out there. It will not appreciate in value like a true investment. A full size pickup is the next best buy.

Thanks for the info.. MSRP is $54495. The "deal" if I have a trade, and use their financing it would be $52495. Im not planing on reselling anytime.. I guess I just need to go outside and bang my head back into reality.. Thanks again for talking me off a ledge!!! My last jeep was a 1972 CJ5 with the AMC 304 V8. That was over 30 years ago..

Im not buying thinking I'm going to resell it.. I just like to know they do hold there value better then most., no matter what package it has. I should have asked if that package de-values because of bigger tires, and the chances that it was bought to be abused, and was. Thanks again for the advice.

The XR package is a lot more than just bigger tires, it includes bigger brakes, lower gears (4:56), steel knuckles, upgraded axles, tailgate reinforcement, the larger tires & better wheels, fender extensions. So, as you can see for the price of that package, you get A LOT. So, if anything the XR package should help it hold its resale value & more than likely make it worth more than most because of the XR package.

But, as others have mentioned, it's still going to depreciate, just not as bad as any other vehicle. I know if the XR package would have been available when I got my 2020 JLUR, you better bet I would have gotten it on my Rubicon for sure.

Hope this helped you some.

$2000 below MSRP is about 3.6% below MSRP according to your numbers. In my opinion, that’s a “meh” deal for that specific Jeep. There’s still quite a bit of meat left on that bone for the dealership to come down. And I’d wonder how fair they are valuing your trade. Lotta folks on here have recently negotiated 10% below MSRP / 5+% below invoice. And since you would be financing through them, that’s another good guy for the dealer finance folks…

But if it is exactly what you want in the color you want it… ?‍♂

Me? I’d counter at $47,500 out the door and try to get them to meet you below $50k out the door in the end, at worst. It’s a Willys (albeit a nice one), but it feels like they are pushing you into Rubicon pricing, just about…?

Others will chime in and either say I’m being fair, or not. You can always try to negotiate- worst they can say is no. Should be interesting. ?

Make sure you check out the spreadsheet in my sig before pulling the trigger, but if it has what you want, it's a decent price, and it's available NOW, then go for it. What matters is how YOU feel about the deal.

As others have noted, the XR package is quite an upgrade. You'd likely spend a lot more than that to do something similar. I'm assuming, of course, that you plan on really using it and it isn't forced to live out its life stuck in suburbia.

Thanks.. I love the hunt. There is some options I would add, and some I would remove. I sent a message to a member that has his dealership listed to see what he comes back at. I'm glad I found thing forum..

I'm in PA, and just want a fair deal. It seams odd to me that I lose $2000 if I don't have a trade or use their finances? I have been reading post on here all day, and trying to figure out what the affiliate program is? I just learned about the tread lightly group, so I will not get that 1% because I will be a new member. I sent my wish list to members that say they can get below invoice, so I will see what happens. I don't think there is anyone in PA that works with a group discount from what I see??

There should be enough details on that spreadsheet for you to be able to find the right combo of things. Losing $2k due to not having a trade should be a sign to look elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure the spreadsheet also has a link to the Tread Lightly details. That usually isn't an option unless you custom order one.

3.6% below MSRP if you have a trade-in to go with it, that they will hang you out to dry on?

  1. Negotiate the price of the Jeep on it's own, and get the price where you want it. At least shoot for 1-2% below invoice (not MSRP). If they won't do that, just go order one from a dealer that will do 2% or more below invoice at a minimum.
  2. Finance through the dealer or don't. But the decision to finance through the dealer should not be tied to the price you pay for the vehicle. If the dealer has a good rate you're happy with and cannot beat elsewhere, then go for it.
  3. If you have a trade in, see what the dealer is offering for it. But make them earn your business on the trade in. Again, don't tie it to the deal on the Jeep. If the dealer offers you around the same price as you can get elsewhere, then go for it. They usually won't be competitive here.
