So I have found myself somewhat chasing my tail and was hoping to get a little help narrowing down my decision. I am currently overseas with the Army and I am looking to place an order for a new JL when I get back. This would be my first wrangler (had an XJ some years back) and I am really wanting this to be a vehicle that I can count on for the next 10 years. I've gotten a bit tired of car hopping. So on to the build ideas. No matter what one I go with I know that I have a few options I want no matter what.

2.0L turbo
Premium audio
LED lights
Safety package
Cold Weather
Black Hard top

Where I am struggling is with the narrowing it down from there. I am looking at 3 main choices.

4dr Willy's with the Extreme Recon package
4dr Rubicon with the Extreme Recon package
2dr Rubicon

This would be a daily driver that will go without mods for a long while. I really do love the look of the 35" tires on either. Being a mustang guy for most of my adult life, I also have a real soft spot for 2 dr vehicles. It is only my wife and I with a small dog and it will be that way for a good while. Rock crawling isn't in the future, but fire roads, hunting trails, 4 seasons of weather, etc would be happening. I am also considering the 2dr rubicon and adding the 2" Mopar lift and putting 35" tires on at the time of ordering. Unfortunately I don't know what kind of money I would be looking at to do that.

Living in SW Virginia, I seem to have a few good dealers within a few hours that I can land 6-7% below invoice with this order. I will certainly be looking to do that.

if you got the money then just get the JLR/UR it’ll cover all your needs and more. But the Willy will do just fine. For what you’re looking for and what you plan on experiencing and doing with it there are no bad options Based off what trims you just listed

I must admit aesthetics do matter. A base Sport S can do nearly anything I would be interested in doing. If I am dropping this kind of money, I want to enjoy looking at it. The rubicon’s bring 4.10 gears. It seems that those are really a minimum for 35’s. Proper gearing from the factory is important due to the cost to change it.

It really got confusing when I used the spreadsheet with invoice pricing. Unless I can’t math. It seems there was only about 1,800-2,000 difference between the rubi XR and Willy’s XR once you start piling in options.

Do you need it immediately? Maybe wait to see if the hurricane engine ever comes to fruition, that thing will be a beast if they pair it with an XR package.

if there really is only $1800 to $2000 difference, then Rubicon every time.

but I can’t see there only being $1800-$2000 difference.

I am sort of in the same boat as you. I am trying to decide between a 2 door Rubi or a 4 door Rubi with XR. There is a 7 grand spread between the two, with the XR package being the only option difference between the two. I imagine the spread between a Willy’s and Rubi, Both with XR, would be less. I am not considering a Willy’s anymore because I use my lockers. My main dilemma is can I get by without the extra room? I like the idea of going back to a two door, and I know I will want to lift/tires, etc faster with a regular 2door. With a XR Rubi, I will be set with 35’s and all the other stuff that package comes with. The 4.56 gearing is nice too, though maybe not as needed with a 2.0 as opposed to a 3.6. People seem to be running 37,s with little to no issue on 4.10 with 2.0. Good luck deciding!

I will certainly double check my numbers but I do believe that to be the case. The MSRP to invoice spread seems to be a little more on the rubi.

a rear locker would be nice every now and then, but I have never used or felt I needed a front locker as well. Unfortunately, it’s just garnish for me.

definitely the space is in question. Unfortunately, I will be ordering blind here. I can’t test drive or see one before I get home. I do have some time. Probably 5ish months or so.

Devils advocate here— got mine in October, 5 months later the MSRP on my build had increased $3,995. Waiting can get expensive with current inflation rates. Don’t buy down because of what you presently “think” you need. You may get more adventurous and modding up is not only expensive but typically voids the warranty. My 2c

One of my regrets is not getting the one touch soft top. If it's an option, get it imo. I use the advanced safety package everyday, as the ACC shines in traffic, and blind spot is great, esp for an SUV. LED lights is a must, as almost all would agree (it should be standard), and the cold weather package will be most useful if you live somewhere cold for the majority of the year. And the premium audio is more than worth it btw. Just my two cents after owning my first jeep after a month.

Btw, I think you'll be fine with the 4 door Willy's with the above options. You'll save much more and get more of what you need for less. The recon package is most useful, especially if you rock climb a lot, but every jeep can handle offroad really well, so it's more of a luxury item for most, as people mainly get it for the looks.

Jeeps are a lot of fun, extremely capable, and can be quite durable with the proper care and a dose of luck, but to say Jeeps are day-to-day reliable would be stretch.

If you want a vehicle that will last you 10 years without problems, I’d look elsewhere.

And no, I wouldn’t look at Ford Bronco either.

Good luck.

35" tires tires fit a stock rubicon, no need for a lift in my opinion. If you do lift it 2" then get a 37" tire.

If you're looking to keep a Jeep for years, consider if you expect to have a family and kids in that time span. If so, selecting a 4 door will better serve a family.
