I have been running Nitto Trail Grapplers in a 275/75R18 or 33.5" tall tire. I have them on stock 70th Anniversary Sahara 18s. They have over 85K miles on them and still are a good tire this winter with 40% tread left. These narrow tires are good in snow and seem to wear great from my experience. This locks me into this tire.

I am waiting for the diesel JLUR and will very likely move up to a 35" tire. Seems like most all are 12.5" wide which really increases the weight. Also, it seems a 315 or 13" wide tire should be on something wider them a 7.5" rim (widest factory).

17" NTG that are 35" include: 315/70 (13" wide) or the 35x12.5 (13") and weigh near 80lbs.

If I go to a 18" rim the 35" NTG include 285/75 (11.3" wide) or the 35x11.5 (11.4" wide) both these are around or under 70 lbs.

I am OK with the look of the JL Rubicon rims but love the simulated bead lock Mopar rim....but 17".

So I will either keep the factory 17" and go with the 285/75R (34" tall) or move to 18" rims and go with the 285/75R for a 35" tall.

Decision.....decisions.

The Mopar beadlock rim can be functional if you want it.

I wish there were more narrower options too. I'm not convinced that wider is always better.

It's a shame there are so few skinny tires out there. To me, the wider the worse: more coverage problems to avoid throwing rocks at other cars, harder to squeeze into tight places, more weight when trying to change a flat tire.

Hey if anybody is running narrower tires on their JK or new JLs, please post some pictures.

A good option could be the BF Goodrich KO2 in 34x10.5R17, but I have read reviews saying they are not true 34"...

I am currently running 255/80/17 KM2's on my JK. They have been outstanding off-road in every kind of terrain, including sand. I wish they had a 35 that was about 11.5 or even 11 inches wide. I'd run those right now, if they were available.

That is what sucks with the 17" wheel. You have to go to a 12-13" wide tire to get over 34" tall.

But with a 18" wheel, you can get to 35" easy with the 285/75R18. Lots of tires to pick from including:
TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T II
TOYO OPEN COUNTRY R/T
TOYO OPEN COUNTRY M/T
NITTO RIDGE GRAPPLER
NITTO TERRA GRAPPLER G2
NITTO TRAIL GRAPPLER M/T
MAXXIS MT-762 BIGHORN
MAXXIS RAZR MT-772
MASTERCRAFT COURSER AXT
COOPER DISCOVERER A/T3
GOODYEAR WRANGLER DURATRAC
GOODYEAR WRANGLER MT/R WITH KEVLAR

Surprisingly nothing from BFGoodrich in this size.

I have had amazing life out of the Trail Grapplers. Will run these again.

Good thread. I too would love a narrowish option. Maybe 18s are the answer with proper backspacing.

I wonder why skinnier tires are not available on 17s.. Would the added weight of an 18" wheel negate the weight savings of a skinny 35" tire?

Most tires run a little less in diameter than what is advertised. I think the KO2’s in 35 x 12.5 x 17 actually run 34.6” in diameter.

I am also interested in going the tall skinny route and running into the same problem...I will add however that Interco makes a true 35x10.5r17 radial tire with siping (Super Swamper SSR). They are expensive and seem to have fewer people running them in the last decade but I heard good things about them when they were more popular. I may still pull the trigger on them and hope they fit on the stock wheels with no spacers, they are NOT light however...

I'd be happy with a true 35x11.5 on 17.

Just an update on the tallest skinniest Nitto Trail Grapplers and Cooper STT Pros all 35s in order from shortest to tallest. Height is the actual calculated height based on Rev/mile...not the listed overall diameter.
  • SSTPro 35X12.50R20E 33.7" - 69 lbs
  • NittoTG 35x11.50R17C 33.7" - 72.6 lbs
  • NittoTG 35x11.50R18E 33.7" - 72.2 lbs
  • NittoTG 35x11.50R20E 33.7" - 70.4 lbs
  • NittoTG LT285/75R18E 34.1" - 70 lbs
  • SSTPro LT295/65R20E 34.4" - 69 lbs
Sure wish Cooper made more 35" tires in 17s. That 285/75R18 is skinniest tire at 11.26" All in the list are between 11.26" to 12.4".

I know there are brands and treads in these brands but these are the two I am dial in on. It will come down to the rim. that I choose. Really wish there was more "beadlocks" in 20s as I am liking that SSTPro 295/65R20.
