Phase 4: IN-PROCESS: Roll Cage, seats, etc. – Painful decision on roof as in order to have the GenRight roll cage I can no longer have the Sky Power Top which we have loved. Putting on a Soft Top for beginning of summer but will also be looking for a hard top to swap out. Need to list One Touch Sky top for sale or possible trade for hard top. Funny enough, of all the changes, modifications, etc. this was the one my wife was saying was a no brainer…
  • GenRight Roll Cage (Powder Coat close match to the gloss titanium color of the rims though I am so tempted to do a red)
  • PRP Seats Front & Rear (Black/Red)
  • Move ARB Compressor to rear due to new seats as it was mounted under the passenger seat
  • Tune shocks to build
  • ???
Will post details when done.

Im a little confused on why the one touch top doesn’t work with the GR cage. Mostly because I have never seen one. Does the one touch top mount to the factory cage? And are you doing the cage or someone else?

Thanks for the comments and questions! Yes, the top mounts directly into holes drilled into the factory cage. GR does not drill those holes in the roll cage, specifically recommends against drilling additional holes in their cage, and is only compatible with a hard top and soft top (they make HW for the soft top to attach to the cage). If it helps, I have attached some pics I have where you can see it open and proximity to the cage where it is directly attached as well as it removed and in the sperate parts broken down to include having the hardware in cardboard to keep straight for installation again as I plan to sell it. The side rear windows pop out similar to the top panels of a freedom top if you are not familiar with the top. Also, to answer your question, I am not doing the roll cage myself as I am not a welder (parts shipped separately to be fitted to your specific vehicle and then welded). Hope all this helps answer your questions.

She's purdy. Wonder how much work it'd be to convert a non sot to use the sot top. That was the one thing they didn't offer with the Bikini color that I would have loved to have.

Thanks! My understanding is a factory JL with factory cage is a swap with no conversion required. I base this on some discussions with an offroad shop as well as some online videos I am just going to put links below so you can view directly and they get credit for work done. I learned from these about disassembly and organization of hardware to make it easy for whomever I may sell to or trade with. I am putting a soft top on to start but would like to have a hard top in white as well but this was the best of both worlds. Worst case is I can order a new hardtop in white from jeep and just sell it. It is more expensive that a standard hardtop and I understand one cannot buy a SOT from jeep unless you get it at the time of purchase (Subject to changes or further validation). I will no doubt miss it!

I do love that blue you have!

Interesting. I never knew how that top mounted until now. That being said, it would be very challenging to use that top with a cage. The guy building my rig could probably figure out a way to do it. But it would not be cheap.

As far as the GR cage, as long as the person welding it is good, they are beautiful! Just be prepared to hear about how many bits or blades that got burned up when cutting the factory cage off and drilling the necessary holes. The factory cage is some seriously hard steel.

Thanks! I can tell you that the offroad shop doing the work on my cage said it may be possible to weld some frame to the cage so it could be used and function since GR recommends no drilling to avoid impacting the integrity of the cage (though if I wanted to do it, they would have wanted to talk to GR regardless before proceeding with such a project). Cage would likely not look as good with all this attached even with clean welds. I also appreciated they were just not looking to take my money as they recommended against that approach given some of the challenges they could see and it would likely not be worth the time and money. To your point about your guy, could probably do it but would not be cheap. This is a good part of why I decided to give up with not having the factory roll cage any longer.

The good thing is, they have already done several GR cages and do like their cages, the design, patented integration parts to integrate into the jeep, etc. I have seen the work they do with welding, and it is excellent (two of the guys in our offroad club have the cages done by them). They started to remove my cage Friday, took the weekend off, and it is already completely removed as of this morning.

Here we go!!!
