A side x side is much lighter, smaller, and shorter.
For how much those crazy things cost you're better off springing for the extra money and just buying a Jeep. Plus you can't drive them on the road.

Just curious to see what most people view as the best Rubicon Off-road platform.

The 2 door with the Shorter wheel base.

The 4 door with the longer wheel base.

The 392 4 door with the longer wheel base and v8 engine.

Just curious to hear people's opinions.
If the Eco Diesel were listed in my opinion that would be the most capable. The low end torque makes all the difference. I pulled a stuck F-250 straight up in incline in 4xhigh with my Willys Diesel without breaking a sweat or traction, just slightly above idle. 24mpg doesn't hurt either.

Lots of east coasters who think they run tough trails in their little foothills too.
There's different types of off roading. I don't think anyone here said anything about one area like the East Coast being too tough. The fact is though as I've said if you take a longer wheel base rig through some of these super tight trails through the woods here and try and squeeze it through the trees that the 2 door just went through you're going to get body damage. Didn't say you couldn't do it. But hey if you don't mind banging your 4 door like a ping pong ball through it you'll still probably get through it. Lol..

If I go with the 4 door I wouldn't dream of taking on those type of tight trails here. With that said There's plenty of wide regular trails that I would. Like logging roads, hill climbs, and the trails in the parks. Even the dirt road heading up the mountain by my house would be great. But not the super tight ones. I'd want the 2 door for those.

During our last trip to Moab we had 8 Jeeps, 7 SWB 1 four door.
On one trail every single 2 door had to winch up one obstacle that the 4 door walked right up. The very next day on another trail we did an obstacle that every single SWB walked right up while the 4 door had to pull cable.

We have quad trails too, we just don't try to shoehorn our Jeeps down them.

Well what ever you want to call them the 2 door handles them well.

You need to warm up the YouTubes and watch Gladiators going down your tight trails.

The 2 door is the same width, and won't fit between the trees in your photo. It won't fit between any trees that a 4 door won't. Yes, there are trails that a 2 door is easier to run due to it's tighter turning radius and shorter overall length. There are some obstacles that are better suited to the swb. The difference is I'll drag the skids to get through and the 2dr might just flop. I have lived and wheeled out west in a multitude of different rigs from tj's to xj's to our current JLUR and even my RAM rebel and much prefer the longer wheelbase for everything from high speed dirt roads out in the desert to steep hill climbs. The truck is great at 100mph+ across the desert. The JLU is better out there than any other jeep I've owned. Moab has been great in the JLU. The Rubicon, Fordyce, and the Dusy-Ershim trail are equally difficult in a built 2 door, but the ride quality is much better in the 4 door. In thousands of miles of trails in the JLU, we've had to pull cable once, and that was burried bumper deep in the snow. At no point have we been high centered to the point we were stuck. A few back ups to find a different line, but never stuck. There was a ledge on cliff hanger that I wouldn't even try in a 2 door, too tall and too steep. Yes we drug the frame a bit, but we crawled right up it. In my experience, both work great but 1 does it much more comfortably and with more stability. Being able to tow more, haul more, and comfortably sleep in the back are huge added bonuses. Lucky for all of us, there are more options now than ever for trail ready vehicles right off the lot. Buy what you prefer, get out and enjoy it, and try to keep it shiny side up.

It is no longer an issue.

Back in the day the trails were just as wide as a CJ/YJ/TJ could squeeze through.

Then the JKU came along and all the trails got wider and trees were cut to accommodate them.

Now, there are tons of Gladiators doing those trails, and a JLU can now squeeze through with ease as the Glad-boys made sure the trails are wide enough for them.

Meanwhile the 2-doors continue to be a lot more sketchy on steep and off-camber obstacles.
