Mod regrets? Have you ever over built?

I enjoyed this video.

I went too far with my CJ7 and uh, I kept my JK stock because of it. I kept my first Jl stock because of it.

I've started modifying this jeep, but I find I am very slow to move into a lift kit or even have the engine tuned.

I am on wrangler #5 I have had 4 JK's and my present JL. I have done lifts on all of them and skid plates but I have also kept them on the mild side of lifts ie 2.5-3.5" and have kept the tires at 35's. I have done most of the iconic trails ie Rubicon, Dusy Ershim all the san juan trails and most of the Moab trails and knock on wood have not broken anything to date..I have never modded the engines (all 3.6's) because there really is nothing to mod on a 3.6 that would get you anything worth while. I did try an aFe exhaust on one of my JK's but one trip to colorado was enough with that and returned to stock when I got home.

I'm definitely regretted mods on vehicles before. I've even reversed some that's why I've taken it a lot slower with this Jeep.

My last rig had 3” lift and 35’s, sliders, skids, etc. Although it was capable, it wasn’t necessary for the trails I like to go on. I’m done with actual rock crawling days. I’m more into mild trails and backcountry exploration.
So with my current JL(UR), I’ve kept it 100% stock, down to the 33” tires. It gets me everywhere I like going (Moab, San Rafael, San Juan, Four Corners). My range is good, and knock on wood, if I need repairs in the sticks, I have a better chance of finding parts. I’ve no plans for mods in the near future.

I dove head-first into modding my Jeep as soon as I got it. Most of what I have done to my Jeep today was done in the first two weeks that I owned it.

I don't really regret any of it, per se, although there are a few items I purchased without doing a lot of research and later figured out I probably would have gotten something different if I knew better at the time. For example, when looking for front and rear bumpers I pretty much just went over to Quadratec, opened their page for bumpers, sorted by price, and bought what seemed to be the best deal. In hindsight, I probably should have done more research and paid a little more for better bumpers. But, at least those are easy to change later if I ever feel inclined.

Most of the rest of my mods were good decisions. I did loads of research in that first week I owned the Jeep, and even today 2 years later, knowing what I know now, I still would have chosen the same ones.

Nicest Jeep I've owned was a stock JLR. I've owned four Jeeps and a handful of other 4x4. They were all modified more than necessary, some to the point of stupidity.

All of my mods have a specific function and purpose save for my replacement steering wheel. I got one of those goofy Chinese ones because it looked cool and my OEM one was literally falling apart.

Yep, and will never do it again. A stock JL Willys or Rubicon is more than enough for my needs right off the showroom floor.

I’ve been able to compare the experience of my stock 2018 to my modified 2019. I enjoy them both for different reasons and happy with where they are both at.
‘I’ve been mindful to have each mod serve a purpose and not do things just to make it “bigger and badder”. 37’s would be nice but I know I’d then look to regear, strengthen or replace the axles…then it might not be comfortable towing the teardrop with it or driving such long distances as we do. I’ll perhaps still do some of the strengthening (chromoly axle shafts, FAD delete, drive shafts) but keep to the 35’s.
We run 7 and 8 rated trails as is and I’m not sure I’d enjoy the potential damage that can come with the 9 & 10 rated trails…..on that basis there’s no justification for bigger tyres/lift.

On current jeep? Nope.
Everything was planned.
Only 1 more thing exterior, roofrack, just need to find the motivation to put it on. It's actually sitting on that bench in the picture.
The final mods are ball joints, tie rod drag link, and regear. Wife wants me to get step sliders and a winch, not that I need them, she does haha!

I learned from my 1st jeep.
Buy once, cry once.
More upgrades, less accessories.

Sure did, the rebuild of the upper 300’s HP SBC in my 63 snowballed into approaching 700 HP full build 6-71 Blown. Over powered and ruined it, a suicide machine, even for the street. Ended up selling it (with a blown rear end) to a guy that wanted the blower motor for his 30’s Rod. Put the rod’s NA Chevy in the Jeep.

I haven't regretted any mods except for some of the cheap amazon interior storage type items. Significant mods on previous rigs have no regrets however, if I would have taken a little more time, I would have gone down a slightly different mod path.

Actually there was one..... beadlocks with the wrong backspacing. It was not originally incorrect, but a week or two later, decided on moving up to 40s. Sold the beadlocks for a huge loss within the first month. I didn't think I would want 40s, and a few months later, switched back to 38s.

Newbies in my area always ask what they should do, and it's hard convincing them to just wait, do the research, get out in the dirt to find out what they want to do. From someone like me telling another to just give it time is pretty ironic.

I built my Jeep fairly moderately for Alaska trails - 37's, 3.5" lift, full rocker and belly skids. This allows traversing most muddy, rocky trails, getting out and having a good time. But lots of the rigs I wheel with are bigger and more hard-core.

Then, I moved to Iowa.

Now, I'm the biggest bad-ass around. Way overkill for the prarie and cornfields.

But, I love it every time I see it and go for a drive!

Go “wheeling” and see what’s actually required. I say spend the mod money on trips and experiences. Jeeps were always fun run abouts, when you add all those things they become way less practical for nearly everything else.
